Power Pumping

I am having trouble with my LO latching so I have been pumping as often as I can. My LC suggests that I do it every 2 hrs. to keep my milk supply plus feed baby. I am also supple. with formula when needed. Anyone else in this position? How many times a day are you pumping? Do you find it difficult to keep up? Its such a challenge during the day to do it with LO needing to be held, etc.

Re: Power Pumping

  • Is your partner at home during the day right now? If you can get him to take LO off your hands after you nurse while you pump, that would help a lot. Just have it be a standing arrangement. Otherwise, you could try taking LO into bed with you while you sit propped up and pump, or sit cross-legged on the floor with LO on your lap. HTH! I know it's hard, but keep it up! It's critical for establishing your supply right now while you're working out your latch issues.

  • get a hands free bra or make one by cutting dime size holes in a sports bra. this lets your hands be free for lo.  i place lo on the boppy lounger next to me on the couch when i pump.  or, i place him on a pillow on my knees when i pump sitting in my glider chair.  i pump every 3hrs and am still seeing lc to work on lo breastfeeding.  hang in there and good luck.  sorry for no paragraphs, typing on phone.

I exclusively pumped when my LO was 3-5 weeks old due to latch issues and I did it 8 times a day.  During the day it was every 2.5 hours so I could stretch it out a bit longer at night if she actually slept, and I worried less if I missed a pumping session that it was going to severely effect my supply.

My schedule was: 4:30am, 8:00am, 10:30am, 1pm, 3:30pm, 6pm, 8:30pm and 11pm.  I pumped for 15 minutes each breast (or 15 minutes total if I pumped them both at the same time).

It worked for us.  My supply stayed there and around 5 weeks she was able to latch better and transfer milk properly.

I would put her in the boppy next to me on the couch so that while I was pumping if she started fussing she was within arm's reach.  Also, I am with the PP about getting a hands free pumping bra.  If you can do both at the same time, hands free it's easier to soothe a cranky baby if neccessary and it's a lot quicker.  When spending so much time pumping a day quicker is definitely appreciated :-)
