Your best tips for getting out the door in the morning...

DD is starting kindergarten this August and I'm getting nervous about getting her to school ready and on time.

Thanks!

  • Make sure she has done everything she needs to do to get ready before she can play or watch TV.  I made a chart last year, it helped.

  • I posted a schedule in the bathroom and kitchen and there was no TV in the AM (no time for playing).  I try to prep as much as I can the night before, like his backpack/take home folder and lunch too.  Right now we're working on the morning routine since it's summer and we have a little time.  we're working toward both kids brushing their teeth and getting dressed on their own by using a reward chart.  So far, so good.

  • Both my kids benefited from having an alarm clock of their own.  I made a visual schedule so that my kids knew what they were supposed to do at all times.

All getting ready is done before breakfast is served.  No TV until absolutely everything is ready to go.

Plan on heading out to the bus at 10 minutes before the bus comes, especially in winter when coats/hats/gloves must be put on.

Make packing the backpack and laying out clothes part of the evening routine so those things are done the night before.

  • Do as much as possible the night before - we always pick out our clothes for the next day when we are changing into PJs and once picked, they can't be changed in the morning.  We make sure school bags are packed and ready and by the door along with anything else that needs to go with them.  If you need to bring lunch, make it the night before.  We have the same set routine in the mornings - potty, get dressed, teeth, hair and then grab a pre-breakfast snack (breakfast is at school - in daycare and PreK) and then get on shoes/coats/etc and get into the car.  It takes us 30 mins max from the time girls wake up until we are in the car.  Once I need to breakfast, we will just wake up a little sooner and add breakfast in as the last thing of the morning routine.

  • The key word... Routine Routine Routine!!!  The routine starts the night before and stays the same all nights of the week.  Start the first week a little earlier in the morning just to guage the amount of time it'll take for your house to get ready to go.

Night before, get everything checked over and put together (backpack) and near the door, when it comes to bedtime, follow the same routine so they know "it's a school night, off to bed!"  In the morning, wake up, go potty (this is more necessary of a step in order to avoid the whines than you'd believe!), get dressed (w/ shoes), do hair/teeth, eat breakfast, out the door...  NO TV during this time unless you've got more than 15 minutes to spare.  The thing is, you can always send them to the bus stop with a piece of toast or granola bar, you can't drop them at the bus stop without clothes..
