Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Whats earliest baby can walk?

My daughter is going crazy with standing up. She just learned 2 weeks ago how to pull up to a stand. Now she is trying to stand without help. She actually did it a few times today. She isn't even 8 months  yet! Whats the earliest a baby can walk?

Re: Whats earliest baby can walk?

  • My LO is at about the same stage and he's about 6.5 months. I'm not ready for this. Everytime I see him standing on his own I almost want to push him down :)

  • If I remember right my brother walked at 9ish months, maybe 10. He also never crawled though.

  • I have a friend whose baby walked at 7 months... ahh! I would say it could be soon, just make sure they crawl first! It is a very important developmental step!

  • It may be a while yet for you... a lot of my friends said that their kids had been pulling up and walking along furniture (cruising) for months before they started walking unassisted.

That said, my sister and her second baby both started walking at 9 months.

    That's untrue. Crawling is unnecessary.

I ditto that I know a baby who walked at 7 months, though.

My son was at the same point your LO was at 7 months though in terms of standing independently/cruising. While he did take his first steps right before he turned 9 months, he wasnt a full time walker until right before he turned 12 months. So there's hope!

Someone on my birth month board has a son who started walking before 8 months old.

DD has been pulling up to stand since 6 months, but she's just started some walking this past week.

  • A baby does NOT have to crawl first. One of my friends has a baby that is 4 weeks older than my LO. My LO is 9 months hers is just 10 months. Her Lo has been WALKING assisted since 7 months and is now at 10 months only walking. She was concerned because alot of ppl were telling her that her LO had to CRAWL so she asked her pedi....the pedi said that it was NO big deal! That said, my LO will more than likely be in the same boat we are cruising and trying to stand with no help pulling up and will be walking soon!
  • my friend's baby has been walking some 8 1/2 months.  crawled for a week and then walked.  won't crawl anywhere now!

There is usually a very long interval between pulling up/standing and walking.  DS1 was pulling up regularly around 7.5/8 mos. but didn't walk until 11 months.

To answer your question, the early end of walking is usually 9-10 months, but there have been babies that walk at 8!

ETA: Crawling actually is important; they need to develop their upper body and arm strength.  It's strongly correlated with fine motor skills, especially things like writing later in life.  Per a baby physical therapist.  So don't encourage your LO to skip crawling.

This.  My bff is a pediatric physical therapist.  She agrees that crawling isn't "necessary" and a baby can skip right to walking.  BUT there are some very important skills that are learned during the crawling stage, many of which will impact them later in life.  So do they have to crawl?  No, but it is still an important stage.

  • My mom checked my baby book last night. She said she thought I was walking at 9 months, turns out I was doing stairs at 9 months and walking at 7.5.

  • I walked at 10 mo and my DH walked at 9 mo.  Ive heard of a few others walking around the same time but I havent heard of anyone walking earlier so my guess would be 9-10 mo.
