I'm expecting my first in December, and my dr. only delivers at Health Central. His office is accross the street, and he believes the standard of care is better than Winnie Palmer (non-teaching hospital, more individualized care vs. baby mill, etc). I know there is potential for good and bad regardless of location, but was hoping someone could share their experiences.
Tia,
Re: Anyone deliver at Health Central Hospital in Ocoee?
If your OB only delivers there then I recommend that you look around for someone that delivers somewhere else. If you are low risk you can even get a midwife that delivers as Winnie Palmer which would give you more personal care.
Also I had my first at a FL Hospital and had a great experience. The staff was really good. I'm going to have my second at one of the area birth centers though.
My OB highly recommended HC over WP although he delivers at both. During one of my appointments, he was complaining about WP because they had run out of beds and he had to deliver one of his patients in the hallway! She had been waiting there in labor for over 7 hours! He assured me that kind of thing would never happen at HC. This story was later confirmed by my birth class teacher, who is a WP nurse, so he was being legit.
My neighbor delivered her third baby there and regrets it. She had a very quick delivery and she feels like she wasn't given the right amount of care after the birth. After all, this was her third (but first deliver at Health Central) so she should probably know.
Baby was just over a month early and had breathing problems so he was put into the NICU. He was actually only put in the NICU over night and then they were both released the next day. It turns out that he should NEVER have been taken out of the NICU so soon because he had some MAJOR breathing issues for the first year of his life. He was in and out of the hospital for a while because of issues with his lungs. He will be two years old in September, and while he's doing great now, his lungs weren't given the opportunity to develop completely so he still has breathing issues and will most likely end up with asthma. All because they released him too early. Even her insurance told the pediatrician on call at the hospital to keep him but they went ahead and signed off on his release.
I don't know a lot of people that have delivered there, but out of the people I have heard from, not one of them have any good things to say about it. Heck, when we went to see her after she gave birth, even though the ward was "locked", there was no one at the door and they just buzzed us in and let us walk right past the nursery without anyone evening asking who we were. In fact, no one that worked there ever asked us who we were. That doesn't seem very good to me.
