Babies: 3 - 6 Months

CEREAL

Who has skipped cereal!?

i am thinking of just skipping cereal with LO and start on veggies and fruits once he is 6 months. We had some tummy/pooping issues with formula so i get nervous thinking about what cereal will do to his little belly! I would just like others inputs :)

Re: CEREAL

  • We're skipping it. I can't see the purpose of it personally.

We didn't but the rice cereal was so hard for DD to digest, but oatmeal cereal wasn't. It was a lot easier for her with oatmeal so that is an option. The good thing about the cereals is that they are filled with extra iron which the little one needs. I have heard an avocado is a great beginner food though....so either way!

  • We skipped cereal and went straight to fruits and veggies.  My recommendation is just to make sure that the puree is really smooth and keep thinning it out until Baby likes it (it took me a few weeks to realize that I just wasn't thinning it out enough), although you can generally start thickening it up and adding texture pretty quickly (within weeks), depending on how your baby likes it.  I started LO with butternut squash and sweet potatoes, then pears and peaches and apples and bananas, then yogurt and mixed veggies and veggies and fruits.  Avocado is very popular for every baby I know except my own! (He does love it now, but he didn't until he was over 8 months old.)

Most baby cereals are iron-fortified, but only a small portion of the iron is actually absorbed (more if you mix it with vitamin c, but then you run the risk of getting really sugary, really high carb food).  Foods that are naturally high in iron are a better source of iron.

Also, there has been some research (I'm sorry that I don't have my references to cite it right now) that has led to some concern that rice cereal, specifically, can spike and drop Baby's blood sugar in ways that aren't optimal.

     Good luck, and have fun!!

  • We will be going right to fruits and vegetables.
  • We skipped it, it constipated her terribly and our pedi said it was really just for practice since it has almost zero nutritional value (other than the iron).

    She eats everything now.
