31 weeker, now 6 months old- feeding

My 6 month old (actual age) still has the tounge-thrust reflex. We just started rice cereal yesterday so I know it takes time, but I was just wondering if anyone has suggestions. Should I keep trying every couple days w/ the spoon?

Re: 31 weeker, now 6 months old- feeding

  • Our F/U clinic had us start at 4 months. It took a few weeks for the tongue thrust reflex to go away some, and only just recently did it go away all together. The feeding therapists had me try once a day. He had five strikes and he was out. If he thrusted that tongue out, it was one strike.

  • My baby is a 27-weeker, now 4 weeks old, and I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect in the future.  I have a 10 month old who was a 32-weeker and he still refuses to eat any kind of baby food but no one has mentioned if it could be from being premature?

  • He really wore his rice cereal and baby food when he was 6 months old actual.  I had to keep trying it, and finally around 7 months, he majically opened up his mouth on Christmas Day and ate the baby food and cereal.

Just you wait, finger food is a bleep, bleep, bleep.  Lots of yucky teddy bear looks, but he is slowly getting used to it.  He loves the HappyBaby Organic Puffs.

  • Unless your pedi has told you that it's important to start, I wouldn't stress and just try every week or so. My LO wasn't ready at 6 months but two weeks later she opened her mouth right away. Most of it squished back out with within a week she was eating like a champ.
  • To get our LO getting used to the cereal, we initially introduced cereal into his bottle with a Y cut nipple so that he could get used the taste and texture.
