Re: University Hospitals

  • I work there.  who is your ob?  i don't go to anyone there, but there obstetrics dept I think is pretty good plus having rainbows right there in the event of complication, makes it even more beneficial.

  • It isn't the OB. I love her. Dr. Karen Ashby. It's the Ultrasound doctor that I ALWAYS seem to get. Dr. Noam Lazebik (sp) he has the WORST bedside manner. I also feel that he freaks me out unnecessarily about things. they weren't able to detect a nasal bone at my 12 week and at my 19 week ultrasound. He says that it's common to not be able to find it in African American fetuses but he still wants me to have an Amnio, I declined. so now I have to go back for another ultrasound at 28 weeks and I have a fetal echo next week. All this over a nasal bone that he says is normal because I'm Black? It's just frustrating. Sometimes I feel that they do these tests just to generate more tests.
    Sorry for the rant. :(

  • @jomojack I had an irritating experience with my ultrasound at UH too.  The doc I had was Jane Corteville, and she was also the resident geneticist whose specialty is finding genetic disorders before the baby is born.
She was trying to convince me that there is a good chance my baby has downs syndrome because the ultrasound shows his kidney is 5 millimeters full instead of 4.5.  Some BS.  Then she followed that with - but this is also common in boys because of the way their bladders hold water.  But we should still do additional genetic testing, an amnio, and a 2nd and or 3rd ultrasound.  I said no thanks.  And she was like ok no problem.  I'm wondering if they just give that spiel to everybody and see how many suckers they hook.  I feel sorry for other mommies who might be worried over nothing and not only that extra bills for possibly unnesseary tests.
IMO  (hormones included) that is also BS that they could not find the nose bone - but it is known that is common in African Americans - so why would they even worry you over that.    I mean who is born without a nose bone?  Please don't worry yourself over this.  I am convinced they are obsessed with prenatal genetics at UH now because they found a way to make more $$.  THey did not do all this with my first son (who is 3)  when I had his ultrasound there was no additional talk.  I even asked Dr Corteville how come they didn't do all this extra testing before and she said "Oh well I came from another hospital 2 years ago and since then I have changed the whole program around to be more inline with other at-risk centers."  Well nothing was "at risk"  about my pregnancy, so why are you trying to make me think it is.....  Yeah I was really turned off

  • Glad to know I'm not alone. I have thought about changing doctors but I don't really want to in the middle of my pregnancy. My husband and I both have decided that we will NOT go there for our next pregnancy. What I hate the most is that no matter what I have this fear in the back of my mind for the rest of the pregnancy.
