Does anyone's DC take music lessons already?
If so, what instrument do they play?
Is there any reason you chose that over another instrument?
Where have you found good lessons in your area? (e.g. parks and rec, private lessons, music schools, etc.)
How old was your DC when you started?
How often are lessons and how long are they?
TIA!
Re: Music lessons?
SS is 16 and plays percussion. He is section leader in his marching band and plays tenors..but he also plays marimba and drum set among others
He started music by playing piano at age 6...I highly recommend that any child interested in playing an instrument start with piano so they learn to read music
lessons are usually 30 minutes once a week and range from $16-50 a lesson depending on who the teacher is.
I would recommend asking the music teacher at your local elementary for recommendations

Many private music teachers are really looking for students who are older (i.e., late elementary school age.) My son really, really wants to learn an instrument, but we've been told by both flute and piano teachers to wait until he's 7 or 8. When I was little, I took piano lessons from about age 6 to 9.
The exception to this might be violin. Kids as young as 2 can start learning via the Suzuki method. Sadly, my son had no interest in the violin! We may revisit piano lessons now that he's a bit older. I agree that piano is an excellent way to start, since kids really learn to read music when they take piano. It's not hard to switch from piano to another instrument later on.
Most kids have the opportunity to start learning an instrument in school in later elementary school. My DD started violin in 4th grade. She's not super-duper enthusiastic about it, and she's not continuing in middle school. I'm happy she got the experience and learned to read music, though!
Most chain stores that rent instruments (Music and Arts, Bach to Rock) offer private lessons. Or try Craigslist!
Thanks for the feedback! I think I will wait at least another year. That kind of helps with my whole "how are we going to have to do everything" panic I was starting to feel, too. ;-)
