I agree about Hampton. Most of the beaches in MA SUCK! They charge a zillion dollars just to park, have no amenities, the nice ones are insanely crowded. Salem (yup, the "witch" city) is a really nice town to visit and it's not the busy time right now.
Maybe it's just because I live around here but I feel like the Boston area isn't really a vacation destination...but there are tons of awesome places to visit that are only 1-2 hours away.
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
Hampton beach in NH, Nahant beach (no board walk like Hampton) some small beaches in Marblehead. Check out the aquarium, science museum, Quincy Market is really fun.

You have to do a duck tour . It's a boat that goes into the water and drives around Boston . If you aren't renting a cah (car ) you can take a cab to Carson Beach - S. Boston

I'm from Boston and the best beach is Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester. It's about 45 minutes north of Boston. Other great beaches Manchester by the Sea/Singing Beach is beautiful. The water is a lot colder than down south.
Other fun things to do in Boston visit the North End (Little Italy), Paul Revere's House, the Old North Church, Follow the Freedom Trail, New England Aquarium, Quincy Market, Newbury Street (shopping), and Back Bay (Copley Mall/Hynes area.
Why leave Boston? There is so much to do right in the city!!!
But if you really want to go to the beach, you can get to the beaches in Westerly, RI in under 2 hours and Newport, RI is even closer. Lots to do in those areas but parking can get expensive.

Love Hampton Beach! We have friends that live in Hampton, and it was a pretty short little train ride to go see them.
