S/o gifts -- wedding presents

How much is standard these days for a wedding gift. A distant cousin of mine is getting married, and I'm debating between cash or getting something off the registry. But what's the typical amount for someone you're not close to?

Re: S/o gifts -- wedding presents

  • The amount I give depends on if I am attending the wedding. If it is a friend/relative that I am not super close with & I wasn't attending/invited I either send up to $50 cash or a gift off the registry costing no more than that. If I am attending the wedding or I am closer to them, I usually bump it up to $75 or so.

  • Fifty dollars is pretty standard and I typically purchase from the registry.

  • A cousin of mine got married a year ago and I gave $40.  I've only met the kid maybe twice so I thought that was a good amount.  I think something off the registry is good too - by the time I looked on theirs, nothing was left which is why I gave money.

  • Not sure where you live, but people here only give cash as wedding gifts (the registry is used for the bridal shower) and the going rate is between $250 and $400. The lower end would be for someone you are not close with or a coworker, etc.
  • Holy crap to the post above about giving $250-$400! I pretty much give $50 total for weddings. Since we will probably be taking DS to weddings as he gets older (he's going to his first in a few weeks!) we will probably start giving more like $75 to compensate for our meals. That is always the way we look at it, enough to pay for our meals.
If I go to the persons wedding shower that is when we would buy off the registry.

The weddings I've been too would cost way more than $75 for three meals. Some are easily over $150 a plate. I didn't know we were supposed to cover that cost though! When DH and I got married 3 years ago, we got between $50 and $100 from most people, but I have no idea what's standard, which is why I threw it out there.

  • Not close - $75

    Close friends - $100

The idea of covering your plate isn't common here. It's one of those things that I've only heard of on TheBump/Nest/Knot.

I guess we don't go to very extravagant weddings Stick out tongue. Two summers ago we went to a wedding of a good friend of my husband. I think we gave them $100 but we don't usually. Most of the time we go to a wedding shower prior to the wedding and give a gift off their registry or other gift valued around $50-$100 depending on the person. We always thought that was standard in our area to give a gift at the shower and then around $50-$100 at the wedding. (Unless you are wealthy but we aren't rich so we don't go crazy). So we are spending on average $100-$150 total combined.

People here go by the "cover your plate + a little extra" rule.  The average going rate per plate at a wedding in NY is $125-$160. Some places are even a lot more than that. That's why I was saying that it depends on where the wedding is. OP doesn't have a location in her profile.

  • not-so-close $100/person (so $200 for DH and I)

    close $200/person (so $400)

around here it's "standard" to cover your plate + a little extra, like PP said, but we are also generous when it comes to weddings.

We live in PA, but the wedding is in Colorado, outside Denver.

  • Wow!  Those are expensive presents!  At our wedding we got an average of $25 to $50 in cash/gifts/gift cards.  And $125 per plate?  Wow!  We paid $21 a plate and got great food!  I usually give a $20 gift for the shower if I go and about a $30 gift for the wedding.  Family or close close friends I'd probably go closer to $50, but that depends on how far I'd have to travel!

    Same here.
