Insurance woes and induction...

I've mentioned before that I was furloughed for the upcoming school year due to budget cuts- well, that and the ridiculous amount of our budget the local charter schools get, but whatever. Anyway, we're still under my insurance until August 31st and then we have to switch over to DH's. He actually has decent insurance, but I'm afraid of how much of a headache it would be to switch over right before delivery- or even worse, if I go into the hospital under my insurance only to have it switch over half way through!

I'm due August 29th so I really really can't afford to go late... I'm planning on trying all the OWTs and sex and all that after I talk to my doctor at Monday's appointment. I'm pretty sure my doctor would induce me close to my due date to save everyone from the insurance headache, but I really don't want to be induced! It makes me nervous.... gah.

I don't know what I'm looking for here, I guess I just needed to vent. Maybe if anyone has a positive induction story they'd like to share?

Re: Insurance woes and induction...

  • Flame away, but personally I would take the induction right before or at my due date just to not have to deal with the insurance mess.  I cannot begin to tell you the horror stories/expenses I've dealt with with employees in a similar situation as you (I work in HR).  I know it's not ideal, but as long as baby is healthy, that's the route I would take.  GL!

  • You may want to go ahead and check with insurance.  There may be something that if you check into the hospital while covered, they have to cover you until you are discharged.

  • I am on Medicaid currently and that will end when my hospital stay does, so we are set up to switch over to DH's insurance as soon as our LO is born (seriously, w JUST got our pediatrician today. Talk about cutting it close!)

I sympathize with the headache of insurance......

  • I was induced on Dec 30 because my insurance was changing dramatically Jan 1st. I was 39 weeks and everything went just perfectly. I was very nervous, but looking back I was glad I took the Dr up on the offer.

  • Before you schedule an induction I would be sure to check with your insurance and make sure it would be covered. When I had my DD my Dr was going to induce me on my due date because I had been on terbutaline and in and out of L&D for 13 weeks, but my insurance wouldn't cover the cost of my induction unless I was 41 weeks. So I could not be induced.

  • I know it's not cheap, but couldn't you just pay COBRA to extend your existing coverage by a month?
