Breastfeeding

Getting ready to register - need your recommendations

We find out the sex of the baby on Wednesday and will be getting our registry together shortly thereafter. We fully intend to breastfeed and I was wondering if there are any specific "must haves" that breastfeeding parents should have. I am especially interested in the type of pump you would recommend.

  • Medela Pump in style Advanced; Lansinoh storage bags; washable breast pads (I liked the Nuk ones); storage bottles (medela makes 3 different sizes); boppy; nursing cover; nursing tanks from target

  • I have the ameda pump in style and it has worked great so far.  I've heard great things about the medela pumps also, I think it's just whatever you prefer.

Otherwise PP pretty much listed everything else that's essential.  I would add to buy some lanolin cream in case you get sore nipples.

  • I have this pump and I really like it.  https://www.amazon.com/Pump-Style-Advanced-Breast-Backpack/dp/B0011E75RK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1311948844&sr=8-2

I also would suggest getting extra bottles, and extra horns.  I have 2 sets of horns and that really helps when I don't have time to wash them.  I like my boppy pillow for when I need to pump and nurse at the same time.  Also, I love my nursing cover.  I used it a lot when she first got here because we constantly had visitors.  https://www.amazon.com/Balboa-Baby-Nursing-Cover-Apple/dp/B001Q87LI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311949108&sr=8-1

Breastfeeding is really hard for the first 6 weeks, but it gets easier and is SO worth it.  This book has answered so many of my questions:  https://www.amazon.com/Womanly-Breastfeeding-Leche-League-International/dp/0345518446/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1311949319&sr=1-1

  • Milk storage bags, i like my boppy, bottles, nipple cream, nursing bras and tops you can breastfeed in, washable and disposable pads.i would also just walk down the aisles and see what pops out for you, you may use some of the stuf and you may not, you can always return it.

  • Unlike pp, I did not like the Boppy for BF.  I recommend the BrestFriend pillow instead.

I have the Medela Pump in Style Advanced (double electric) and it works great.  Wasn't cheap - but totally worth it!

Nursing bras!!  And I like the disposable Lasinoh breast pads personally.

  • I have the Medela Manual pump.  Perfect for what I want it for (Have a small freezer stash for date nights, etc)  Cheap and works just as well as the hospital grade one I rented from the pharmacy.  If you plan to pump a lot then invest in an electric.

  • A good nursing cover, such as a Bebe au Lait. (it might not won't be of much use when you're just learning during the first few weeks, but for later it's something I constantly use since I don't feel comfortable to be uncovered in public)

  • A nursing cover, if you feel like it would make you more comfortable nursing out in public.   If you get one, make sure it has plastic in the top to hold it out so you can see what you're doing.   Bebe au lait has what I'm talking about.   The ones from target didn't and were just a waist of money.

I would get the medala lanolin it is much smoother and easier to apply than the laninosh lanolin.

I loved my Breast Friend nursing pillow.   It is much sturdier than the boppy and the lactation consultants where I delivered recommended it over the boppy.   My pedi was very impressed with it when she saw it at the hospitals also.

I used a medala pump in style pump and it worked fine.

For the hospital I would pick up some target nursing tanks and then once you've delivered and your size has settled a few weeks after delivery I would get some good nursing bras and tanks.   My chest is very large and I really like the bravado tanks and didn't care for the glamour mom ones.   I would wear those under my shirt if I knew I was going to have to nurse while out and about since I didn't want my stomach showing while nursing.

  • Thank you all so much for your feedback!! It is really giving me a great starting point :)
