How to know DS is ready for toddler bed (besides the obvious)

Yes, I know...once he starts climbing out of the crib, it's time for a toddler bed.  But, he sleeps all over the crib so if he gets a toddler bed, he's going to be sleeping all over it instead of the normal way with the head on the pillow on one side.  How or when will he learn to sleep the right way?

    DS moved from the crib to a twin bed at 3.  He never attempted to climb out, slept great in his crib and I wasn't about to go messing with sleep just to get him in a twin bed.  Once he was fully potty trained, we moved him so he could go to the potty at night.  In his crib, he still slept all over the place so I figured I would find him in who knows what position in the twin bed but from night 1, he has slept with his head on the pillow and only once have I found in in a funny position.  My guess is that it's totally dependent on the individual child.  Good luck!

    We moved my DS1 to an on-the-floor wooden frame bed with sides that my husband made. Once I found out I was pg with #2 I needed that crib and moved him over about a month before baby was born. He did great, he still sleeps all over the place but he cannot fall out (he's 3 now). We made it fun, he helped daddy put it together and he picked out his bedding (he was helping, I actually picked it out). =)) HTH !

    We moved DD at about 22 months, and she took about a month to start consistently sleeping with her head on the pillow.  She was all over the place before that.

    DS was 20 months when we moved him from the crib to a twin bed with guard rails.  He is now 28 months and sleeps in the bed without the rails.  It took him a month or so to consistently sleep with his head on the pillow.  But really, does it matter if your son sleeps the "wrong" way so long as he doesn't fall out (you can get guard rails to help keep him from falling out) and gets enough sleep?
