Hitting and Biting 2 year old

Is this normal?  My DS just turned 2 and mainly hits and bites me or DH when he is mad at us, when we are asking him to do something he would rather not do.  We use time out and he goes right to it, cries, doesn't move and says "Sorry Mama" over and over again.  When I let him get up he will be fine for 5 mins or 5 hours but sometimes bites or hits again shortly.

Any tips?

    My LO went through the hitting portion (no biting) and it was just a phase...testing the boundaries.  Time out worked for a little bit and when it stopped, we would take away whatever he was playing with and explained to him why, etc...HTH.  After a few months, he moved on to his next phase...yelling.
