**what's your toy buying "style"?**

Do you buy/give toys as you go or do you buy and give for special occasions (birthdays, holidays)?

I've been going along just kind of buying and giving but as Lorenzo is getting older- I dont want him to think he gets a gift everytime we go to the store. His bday is Jan- so he was kind of without summer toys...

  • We only buy toys for her birthday and Christmas.  I don't even do a big Easter basket with toys, just little things that fit inside Easter eggs for her to find.

Now, I'm talking more about big toys.  I'll buy her some crayons or a small puzzle every now and then, but generally we don't do bigger toys randomly.  We also have a small house with nowhere to put toys, so I really try and limit what we get.

  • Well there was a reason I called you for toy buying advice ;-)

I bought LO things for Christmas and maybe something for her birthday.  But I can't remember what.  I rarely buy her toys unless it's the next stage thing (like the Tow Mater truck).  And most toys I've bought her have come from garage sales. My parents send her a toy every few months.  I will however get her books, usually she always gets one from the Target dollar bin (but we maybe go to Target once or twice a month) and then every so often from other places.

  • Stella has sooooo many toys from Christmas, her birthday and MIL going to garage sales this summer.  I did recently buy her a coloring book and crayons to have on vacation and a couple of toys for her pool.  If I'm going to buy something I want it to be something I think she will really enjoy and use, not just because.  I definitely don't want her to think that she's going to get something every time we go to the store.

  • I rarely buy him toys for no reason... maybe something from the dollar bin at Target to keep him occupied while I shop! He has a Memorial Day birthday, so it's a perfect time for him to get outdoor toys. If not, I definitely would have bought him his bike anyways.

My mom, however, goes overboard. I swear every time he sees her she has something for him, whether it's clothes or toys. I guess that is what grandmas are for, right?! She has been buying him these monster trucks from Wegmans every week, and he now has the whole collection. I just talked to her, and she said she ordered him Finding Nemo and it came in yesterday... so she's excited to watch it w/ him when he sleeps over tonight.

  • I mostly just buy new stuff for Xmas and Birthday, even then it isn't much.  But I also buy random things whenever.  Like if I see a really good deal on something that I think they would really like.  But I also buy yard sale stuff when I find it.  I think it makes a difference if you stay at home too, kids just need more toys if they are home all day.  I find it a bit challenging keeping my kids constantly engaged.  So yeah, we have too many toys, 95% are preowned.  But we rarely buy them things when we are a the store.
  • Charlotte's still at that stage where her abilities are changing SO fast, sometimes I feel like we should be getting her some new toys but she still likes the things we have at home, and gets to play with new things at DC. We've really hardly bought her anything, but especially my mom gets lots of things for her, usually something for every month birthday. Although they usually stay at her house, so that is ok too. MIL, on the other hand, likes to stock pile things until Christmas. Seriously, we will have to take 2 cars this year I think.

  • I buy toys for Christmas and her half-birthday (with her real birthday so close to Christmas, DH and I just get her something small to open on that day and then get her something special on her half-birthday- this year she got a train set).  I will pick up little things here and there, but even at three she hasn't begun asking for things when she sees them in stores.

  • We just buy "big" toys for b-days and holidays.  And then we buy books and smaller things like DVD's that are on sale throughout the year.  We definitely don't buy a lot though.

  • Guess I should take some notes here.....I buy and buy and buy and buy! haha I pretty much get him something small EVERY time we go to the store! Big stuff is usually for a holiday or if he needs it. I am trying to get some stuff on CL, but always find a need to buy it new instead. Like, he needs a sand box and he needs a power wheels.....he also needs a bounce house! lol Ok, maybe he doesn't need those things.
