IPT(Infant Potty Training)/EC question!

I am reposting this from the 9-12 month board since no one there seems to know what I'm talking about.

"DD used the potty beginning at 5 mo which is later than most IPT. She took to it right away and did some pee and all poo in the potty up until about 8 mo. She had already started crawling, but we moved so had a big transition and it seemed like she started boycotting the potty. We've been struggling with this for about 4wks now (she is now 11mo),and I am wondering if anyone else went through this that may have some suggestions.  If she continues, I may stop altogether until we PT for real after she starts walking. I don't want this to be something she hates, and it hasn't gotten to that point, she just stopped using it. I miss the days of no poopy diapers! "

Re: IPT(Infant Potty Training)/EC question!

  • As I understand it, it is normal to regress with EC (along with other stuff) when hitting milestones.  I would just keep offering, and keep respecting any no signals she gives you.  Have you read Diaper Free by Ingrid Bauer (gosh, I think that's her name, any way)?  There's some good info there, but I don't have it right now to quote.

  • Obviously we aren't there yet, but I remember the book specifically mentioned that 10 months is a difficult age for EC. I think she cited examples from around the world & that age is universally full of misses & difficulty. Hopefully you two get back on track soon!

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  We started EC around 6 weeks old.  We had good months and bad months, but around 9 months he went on a major potty strike.  I pretty much stopped offering, because he never wanted to go, and it made him mad.  Starting about a week ago, he started pointing to his diaper when he was going.  I took that as a sign he was ready to start again, and he's been doing wonderfully!  I'm not ready to move him out of the diapers full time because he isn't very verbal, and I think it will be a lot easier when he can communicate when he needs to go more easily.

  • Yep!! Totally normal. The book talks about it and we went through it too (we also started at 5mo,btw). We've been through ups and downs, but my daughter is proof EC works. She is diaper free and tells me she has to go all the time. Just make sure you are always talking to LO about it - "oh, looks like you did pee pee, you have to tell mommy" and make sure you're signing. I found that after the 13mo mark, something just clicked. And also, things got even better when we put the potty chair away and started using the rim full-time. Seriously, EC is one of the best things I've done for my daughter. Everyone made fun of me for doing it originally, but my girl hasn't had a poopie diaper in MONTHS. And we are all much happier as a result.
  • we have gone through a few strikes - and even just some bad and good days. We just offer as much as we can and go with the flow, so to say. ;)
