Feel bad for the little guy

My LO is pretty big - 6 months old and in the 90%.  However, he still has a strong startle reflex and is very twtichy.  He LOVES LOVES LOVES to be swaddled, but we have to stop.  He is so big and strong he can now roll over even when he is swaddled so it just isn't safe to wrap him up anymore.  I feel bad for him because he is struggling to fall asleep.  We are going to have to go through sleep training with him.  I know it is for the best in the long run, but it breaks my heart to hear him crying.

    :(

And I hear ya with the big kids. DS was always 90-95th percentile as a baby and we had to  stop swaddling early. We switched him to a sleep sack at that point but as we mostly bed-shared he was still pretty snuggly even without the swaddle.

::hugs:: I hope you guys get through this as painlessly as possible.

Since you're no longer swaddling.. make sure he's warm enough.

C gets really fussy if he's too cold (just like his mother.)    That's why he's had a blanket in his crib pretty much from Day One.  Now he won't sleep without it, even when it's hotter than blazes in his room.

sleep sacks can really help with that.  And you could introduce a lovey around this time, which could help.  DS got really attached to his blankies from TRU (My Blankie -- a whopping $8) which are small around that age.

  • We went through the same thing with my daughter when it was time to stop swaddling her. She just couldn't stay asleep without the swaddle until we finally did some Ferberizing, It was the most horrible thing I have ever gone through. I would sit in the living room and cry right along with her. But it did work and she did start sleeping much better.

  • Thanks for the feedback everybody.  I am pretty sure that he is warm enough for now, but I will be buying a sleep sack for the winter.  He is really good at night, but his naps are becoming almost non-existent.  He was never very good at napping, but now he is maybe taking 3 thirty minute naps a day.  He is just exhausted.

I need to get this little guy on a nap routine.....
