Re: 30 weekers?

  • my boys were born 30 weeks and 3 days, they were in the NICU for 6 weeks just learning to eat and grow, We are very luck and have had no major issues. The hardest part is preparing for the NICU journey. It is pretty much like a roller coaster ride. GL

  • noah was born at 30 weeks, and was a feeder/grower. We had lots of issues w/ A's and B's-which kept us there for 8 weeks. It is definitely a roller coaster of emotions.
He did so very well in the nicu, and once he was home as well. He is now 13.5 months.
The nicu life is tough, and this board is very helpful, and encouraging, because--as great as family and friends can be, they don't understand.

while in the nicu, be as hands on as you can be, it will help you bond.  ask anything, and everything, there isn't a stupid question. DO kangaroo care, it is just wonderful. I was hesitant at first, cause i had a hard time bonding, it sure did help.

take lots of pics and write down all you can (something i wish i did).
give yourself a break, if you are overwhelmed, and too tired, don't worry about not staying as long as you wanted, or hoped. Everyone is different. You may not make it to visit one day, and that is okay. Listen to your body.

    Good luck!

  • My son was born at 31 weeks, 4 days. He weighed 4lbs. 2oz. He spent 3 weeks in the NICU. He came out breathing on his own. (I had steroid shots to mature his lungs while in preterm labor before he was born.) He had some Apnea and had to come home on a monitor and medication. He is now a healthy, thriving 6 month old and the only medical problem is a little bit of Reflux.

  • We were 30.6. He was 3 lbs, 11 oz, and were in NICU for apnea/bradycardia for 50 days. After being home for two weeks we had to return for another 8. It's four months today & we still have the monitor at home.

I guess just be prepared for the unexpected - everything is a rollercoaster even when you're standing still.

You should consider getting a Pack-It icebag (look for it on Amazon). It was invaluable to me for bringing BM to the hospital.

Feel free to ask any questions here :) You'll be in good company!

  • 29w6d twins. First 4 days in Level III and another 39 days in Level II. about 6 weeks total. One had a PDA and several hemangiomas and the other required a PICC. Came home together and are doing great! Born at 2lbs 4 oz and 3 lbs. Currently about 15 and 17 lbs.

  • My son was a 30 weeker, well 30+3 and was 2lbs 10 oz at birth. We were in the NICU for 59 days. He was on a vent for about 1 week total (was on came off and back on) he was on CPAP for a couple of weeks and nasal cannula for 5 weeks. He had a PDA which ended up closing after we came home. We also had issues with bradys but its normal.

Best advice I have is to take a lot of pictures and videos!!! that is something I regret with our experience. There is not really anything you can do to prepare just know that it will be a roller coaster of emotions and you will have good days and bad days and typically bad days follow really good ones. Don't be scared to ask questions and really understand what is happening. Journal or join a local support group to help you work through the grief. Best of luck!!

  • My daughter was a 30 weeker and was in the NICU for 30 days, mostly as a feeder and grower. She was 3 lbs 8 0z but did lose more then 10 % in her first week Despite that she breath room air from birth and never needed oxygen or any assistance. All babies are different though and we were fortunate for her strength.

Like others have said I would recommend doing as much skin to skin ( kangaroo care) as possible ,I really feel this makes a huge difference in their progression.Take pictures, ask as many questions as you think of and expect good days and bad, but know that you will get through it eventually !
