So I was watching HLN and they featured this story.

They also said on HLN that her doctor came to her DH's court date to testify that it was indeed an emergency and that her ute was close to rupturing. They also supposedly live in a rural area and the roads are not as busy.

Thoughts? I would have called an ambulance but I can't blame the guy for driving so fast.

    That's a tough one-- probably endangered other's lives driving that fast (105mph), as well as their own.  But at the same time, it's a medical emergency.  I'm surprised there's not already some sort of law about this.  I doubt it's the first time it's happened.

    That's just wrong! I know there are laws we all should abide by, however, there are exceptions to be made in this case!

    I have police officers in my family and I know they would be more helpful than anything. Of course they'd pull them over in the first place. They were going WAY over the limit but once my officers knew the situation, all bets would be off and they'd get an escort to the hospital, a "Good luck, but slow down from now on" and a neat story to tell the baby when it gets older.

    If these city officials have any decency, they'll reverse this.

    He should have called an ambulance. I'm sure nobody would be feeling sorry for him if he had hit and killed someone on the way to the hospital. While I recognize that this was an emergency, this doesn't give him a free pass to endanger everyone else on the road.

    There is a couple facts that were left out of the news story.

    - They were over an hour away from the hospital. Shopping.

    - They were offered a police escort in the second city they passed through, and declined it.

    To be perfectly honest; I don't agree with the cop, but I also know that if I was high risk, I wouldn't be an hour away from the hospital shopping at that point. Yeah, I get that you can go shopping when you are high risk, but would you risk it that far away?

    I don't know why they didn't get an escort in the first place. Even if the cop wanted to also give a ticket why no escort? I also don't know why they refused the second time around too.

    However, just because you are high risk doesn't always mean you are going to be near a hospital at all times. It depends what type of situation you are in. They were probably in the middle of shopping when she ruptured/bled/started having contractions or whatever.

    Ambulances aren't always predictable either. Who knows how long that would take? They probably figured that they could get there faster this way.

    In all honesty maybe the fine can stick but suspending the license is a little harsh.

    I had not heard that part of the story. I can not understand why you would decline a police escort in that situation. I also agree that if I was as high risk as this woman apparently was I would not go that far from the hospital.

    I get they were freaked out about her labor but they went shopping 75 miles away when she was that far along. if going into labor is going to make you have to be at the hospital ASAP and no other hospital would do, why did they drive 75 miles out of the way at what was it 37 weeks? Even going the speed he was going getting to their hospital would have taken around 60 mins. so there was bad decision making going on all over that.
