2nd Trimester

how many...

Newborn outfits should I plan for?  From what I understand, they typically wear one size larger than what they are (3 month baby = 6 month clothes), right?  I plan to buy a NB sized outfit for coming home, and then planned on a bunch of soft fleecy sleepers for a while, but didn't know how many of them I should get in NB versus 3 month size?  Also, should I plan onesies with pants to go over for her, or should I just plan on the sleep and play outfits with footies?  Any help would be appreciated!

Re: how many...

  • I think this is hard to plan for especially if this is your first baby.  If you have a 5-6lb baby then he/she could wear NB clothes for several weeks.  On the other hand a 9-10lb baby may never wear NB clothes.  I would plan on bringing a couple choices to the hospital NB, 0-3month etc.

  • I bought the carter's sets that have a sleeper, a onesie and footie pants. Some even come with hats. In the size dept, I would get a few in newborn, like the take home outfit and a few more for at home. But I would buy mostly in 3 months and 6 months. I personally bought all 3 months. I really don't have to buy too much cause i have all of DD#1's clothes from when she was a newborn. GL HTH!

  • thats a good idea for the coming home outfit...I know not to wash many outfits before the baby comes home, in case of size (or you have the opposite of what they tell you!)  I was just curious how to try to plan..at least a little!  Thanks!

  • So far I have kept my splurges to 3-6 or 6-9 mo in size. My reasoning is that I'm sure we will be given a lot of cute newborn or 0-3 outfits as gifts. We'll probably end up packing our favorite outfits from each size range for the trip to the hospital, that way we will know that SOMETHING will fit.

As for amount? I honestly have no clue. I would almost rather have too little in the small sizes than too much. I figure we can always run out and buy some more sleepers and onsies. I would hate to have a bunch of clothing laying around that she will never get to wear.

  • my son was 8lbs. 6 oz. 21 inches. and was in newborn stuff for a couple weeks.. just because i don't like big baggy outfits on him .. he was comfortable in that. and i even went out and bought a couple more things in newborn because it fit him so well.. even that big... i also bought a lot of 0-3.. because IMO the 3 month stuff was just to big.. but i guess it all depends on the baby.. he is three now.. and always wore his size... at the exact same age he should be.. hopefully my next will be the same way

  • I would suggest these at first since you are really not going to many places, when lo is born and it's easy to change the diaper...

  • I agree with a pp about 0-3 months being a bit too big for newborns. My son was early so he wore preemie clothes. Even when he gained a little and could technically fit in newborn clothes he was swimming in them.

When you are buying footie pj's and outfits something I didn't think about with my son is their feet have to be able to reach the footie part. I have bought about 6 newborn outfits and 6 newborn pjs. The rest is 0-3 months and up. It's good to have a few newborn outfits but not too many until you see what size baby you have. My brother was very long and only one ounce under 10 pounds. He never fit in newborn clothes! Thankfully my mom didn't buy many and she kept the receipts for the ones she did.

  • The majority of my kids could wear the newborn size for about a month or longer. Most tags will say up to 11lbs.  Keep in mind also how often you want to do laundry. You will  usually go through two to three outfits a day. My reasoning is accidents at the changing table or spit up. So if you plan on laundry once a week think about 14 to 21 outfits. Now this includes onesies.

I use both onesies and footed outfits depending on weather. If it is warm the onesies win out with socks or a blanket.

  • Everyone in my family told me the same thing, but in my gut, I knew that baby would be just like me and DH and be long and lean, so I decided not to listen to my family. DD was born at 41 weeks and weighed 7lbs, 15oz and wore NB size clothes for 2-3 months. She wore 3mo from 3-6 months. She never wore a size ahead, she always wore what was the same as where she was at. So my advice is consider the builds of you and your SO; you'll have a better idea of what baby's size will be.

  • It is hard to plan.  I though I was having a pretty big baby and didn't buy much newborn.  Turns out our DS was 6 1/2 pounds and wore newborn for a month.  Then 0-3 for until about 3 months old, then 6 months clothes up until right about 6 months.  He was pretty close to the size he was supose to wear.  I just wasn't ready for that newborn size.  So defiantly have some!  What threw me was if the size said 6 months it was 3-6, and if it said 9 months it was 6-9 months, ect.
