gift for nurses at hospital?

Okay, so on the August Mommies board and the tri boards I occasionally see posters say they got a basket of goodies or cookies or ordered pizzas for the nurses at the hospital while they were there after delivery. Did you do this? I've never even heard of this until reading it on the boards. Maybe I was just too exhausted with DS, but it never even crossed my mind. I'm wondering if I should do a basket of candies or have DH pick up a box of cookies from our local bakery if this is a standard thing to do around here. Help me out ladies! :)

Re: gift for nurses at hospital?

  • My DS was born in late October so we brought a Halloween pumpkin filled with candy.  Upon my post-csection stroll around the nurses station later that night, I saw that most of the candy was gone!  They took good care of me!

  • I delivered @ Kennedy and had a huge edible arrangement (they are right next to the hospital) delivered the day I left all 3 times. I also gave a thank you card & gift cards to the Cheesecake Factory to 2 nurses who were especially nice and helped me get BF-ing down the lst 2 times.

My mom works there though, and they took extra great care of me, so I wanted to do something nice.

I actually had a nurse who helped me in 2009 (when I delivered DD2) stop in when I delivered DD3 to say thanks for the card & gift card I gave her! So a little goes a long way -- but because this nurse remembered 2.5 years later, I'd guess that it's not the "norm."

  • I sent cookie trays :-)  I had one nurse who was a real piece of work and was pretty much opposed to me tandem nursing the twins and had a fit each time she came in my room and I was doing it (the other nurses, lcs, pedi etc were all fine with it) so I made sure that the cookies were sent on a day that she wasn't work....mean but I was all sorts of hormonal.

  • Thanks for your ideas ladies. Last night I picked up a variety of candy to put in a basket that way I can have it ready and not forget about it. Funny thing is, when I mentioned it to DH he told me that he's almost certain he sent flowers to the nurses the day we left the hospital. He would remember, me-not so much! So I guess we did do something, I just didn't remember. Chalk it up to pregnancy/baby brain!

    • i had two c-sections--5 days each in the hospital. Every day my husband or a visiting family member bought a snack of some sort for the nursing station. (day and evening shifts!) Nothing big--like box of munchkins, bag of bagels, tray of cookies, box of candy--Just something to nosh on while they are doing their rounds. i've never had such great experiences at the hospital. i don't attribute that to the snacks--but i'm sure it doesn't hurt either! they work hard dealing with very hormonal and anxious moms--a cookie can't hurt to make them feel appreciated. and they are extremely gracious about the little things like that.
