I'm convinced that maternity models...

Aren't really pregnant. Either that or super photoshopped.

I got my Destination Maternity catalog in the mail this week. Flipping through, they all look like Victoria Secret models...but with belly bumps.

Okay so maybe it's possible for some models to stay stick thin while being 9 months pregnant, but if that's the case I don't want to know about it lol. I think I'm jealous enough

That is why they are models, because they photograph well.

  • Yes, I noticed that too in all the magazines. The girls are all stick thin everywhere else with a baby belly. That is SO not what I look like.
  • Yeah- I look pretty much like a watermelon with legs at the end of nine months... with a huge extra watermelon sticking out of my belly. Big all over could be the only phrase used to describe me. But a lot of my friends who are stick thin to begin with (size 0's) pretty much stay the exact same; from the back you can't tell that they are pregnant. And I'm not a big big girl to start out with; I'm a size 4, but man oh man, any weight I gain goes straight to my butt/chin/jowels, arms. So not fun...

  • I figure i can hate the Victoria's Secret models for having all that will power and dedication, so i'll hate the maternity models too... it's only fair.

  • The part that really makes me giggle is the heels they are wearing in some of those photos....come ON.

  • It's so frustrating! What bothers me is not so much that these women look "amazing" while pregnant, (unless they are indeed super photoshopped or wearing fake bumps... then I would be seriously bothered) but that they are the standard of what a beautiful pregnant woman is expected to ideally look like.

Yeah that's me. I'm usually a size 4 and 5'2 but when preg I'm a watermelon w/ legs. My face and arms get super fat too. It's just not a good look lol. I was looking at motherhood maternity catalogue yesterday and was thinking the same thing. I have no hope of getting into skinny jeans anytime soon.

  • I absolutely hate that they use super skinny models in maternity ads. Why?

Well, because most people don't look like that, and it makes it really hard for me to gauge what *I* would look like in these clothes, or what the average pregnant person would look like in them.

I'm know that they are using models to sell the clothes, but in the case of maternity, a stick figure modeling me a dress or pants, when I'm 5'10 and 200lbs really just doesn't work... At least if I could see the clothes on a model who has a more realistic weight, I'd have a better idea of what to expect!

  • I read somewhere that many maternity models only model into month 5 or 6.

Also, I totally agree with someone else's post that they have people whose job is to make them look good.  Also, that's their job.  If my only job was to look good, I'd probably have more time to devote to that, but I don't, so I'll be happy with me.
