Reading over orders- Question and what now?

One of the lines reads, "Early reporting not earlier than 1 November 2011 is authorized to the PCS station"

Does that mean he's to report to his duty station on Nov 1?

WE now have the paper orders and the information to contact people. I feel like I need an "Orders For Dummies" book. lol. What should we start doing? He's getting ready to go to BOLC in Ft Sam and we'll be going to Bethesda, MD for his first duty station.

We are authorized 10 days in a hotel after going there to find a place to live, so we have a few places picked out to look at.

I'm starting to get nervous/freak out. Lol

Re: Reading over orders- Question and what now?

  • Sounds like to me thats his last day to check in.  DH usually would go like the day before, but for us he never reports to his actual place of work, he checks in some random place somewhere else on bases lol.  I would have him call his higher up just to confirm if yall are confused, we did that A LOT when we moved lol. and they only gave us 9 days from his graduation from prototype to move ( you usually get like 20 or something, but they decided he needed to be sent to another random school they dont send anyone too lol)  So we had 9 days to move and our new place sucked since we didnt go look at it beforehand lol.  We ended up spending all of our savings on a last minute rental but you learn from mistakes! lol Good luck to you!!

  • Where are you moving opposed to where his school is because there are traveling limitations on how far/much per day. We got to the base the night before he had to report. What may happen is he will have to go ahead and you will have to stay behind for the movers.

  • Hey, that just means he cannot report any earlier than Nov 1st. If you read over the orders it should say that early reporting is authorized and there should be a no later than date. The no later than date is the most important date. For example, my husband's report date is November 1st as well but in his orders it says he is authorized early reporting not to exceed 30 days which makes it Oct 1st for us. Fortunate for us we are trying to leave Fort Irwin (hate it here) so he is going to take those authorized days and report early so we can leave here earlier lol. But, he didn't want to report earlier he has to be checked in his unit no later than November 1st. Hope this helps.

  • i agree it sounds to me like there should be another date on there. it usually says something like "must report by". I would look for another date. It kind of sounds like he cant report before nov 1.

First thing I would do is go to move.mil and book your move. Also if you are thinking about living in housing to call that base and ask if you can get on the wait list now. Some places let you get on the list once you have your orders. other places let you get on the list after your husband has reported.

    Good luck!!!

  • Orders can have a date range for reporting. Your does- it just doesn't come out and say it exactly. The orders state he can not report earlier than 1 Nov- so don't show up on 31 Oct.

BOLC ends 31 Oct. He is authorized to report to Bethesda on 1 Nov. Somewhere in the orders you should see "report NLT date XXX". That NLT date is the LAST date he is authorized to report. This gives you a reporting range- he can show up anytime between 1 Nov and the NLT date.

Let's say that his NLT date is 20 Nov. If he decides to report to Bethesda on 15 Nov, he will be charged leave from 1 Nov until 14 Nov. Keep this in mind when you are planning.

He will be authorized travel days from Ft Sam to Bethesda. He will not be charged leave for those travel days. I *think* it is 4 days...he will find out when he does his travel paperwork and DA 31 at the end of BOLC. For our example then: Nov 1, 2, 3, and 4 are travel days- he would report on 5 Nov and would not be charged leave.

The 10 days he is authorized is called Permissive TDY. Here's the tricky part. You need to find out who is authorizing the permissive TDY. When I was at Ft Sam at OBC going to my new station, the new station granted the 10 days once I was signed in at the post. Other people had their 10 days authorized by the OBC class at Ft Sam. He needs to find out how it will work for him- he may have to sign in at Bethesda and so some inprocessing before he can start his permissive TDY. Some posts grant permissive TDY right off the bat, others make you wait a month..it just depends. He can call his new command and ask when he gets closer to the end of BOLC.

    I hope this helps!

Permissive TDY is granted by the duty station you are GOING to. A lot of posts will grant it from the one you are leaving, but it really comes from the post you are arriving at. They are the ones that grant you the option to take that time off to look for housing. It IS a privilege and not a right, so there are very rare times where you wouldn't be able to take the time needed. I'm sure it won't be an issue, though. Good luck!

  • Recommendation - if he cannot explain what all of this means, then take the orders to ACS and ask them.  They should be able to explain it all in a language you can understand.

If he does not understand his own orders, he needs to go to his S1 and ask questions.

    Hi Noah-Bear!

It sounds like you figured it outSmile  If his classes end Oct 31st then I'd probably try and arrange movers as soon as you can after that.  Not sure how much stuff you have, but it may very well take more than a day (ours took 3, two packing and one loading the truck).  You'll want to get with TMO (or whatever its called in his branch) well before that though so you can get the dates you'd like.  Sounds like you've already figured out the drive time and that you'll likely have at least a few days in DC before he has to report.  Hopefully that will give you wiggle room to deal with the movers & a chance to find a new home.

Definitely give me a shout if you have any questions.  My DH is Navy, but a lot of the questions and concerns you'll likely have will be the same as what we dealt with.

It means that he cannot arrive before 1 November. There is usually an early report date but when does he actually PCS. I'm sure he would be happy to explain this all to you also. I mean, I know that if i was married to someone who wasn't in the service I would want them to understand everything I was going through and all the processes. Luckily, my husband has been in longer than I have.
