DH and I disagree on when to brush the kids' teeth. Of course before bed...but for the 2nd time we're supposed to do it each day, he says after breakfast, I say before breakfast like right when they get up.
Thing is...although I'm off now, when they go to daycare twice a week during the school year they'll eat breakfast there and so we'd have to brush their teeth before we left the house in the morning. I want to start establishing a consistent routine instead of what we've been doing.
What do you do?
We plan to get them to the dentist soon for a "regular" check up. They've been with me and had their teeth counted and stuff, just not an appointment just for them.
Re: probably a silly question: toothbrushing?
I brush (my own teeth - no babies yet) right when I get up. I can't stand morning-mouth. And I don't eat until I get to work, so that ends up being my only morning brushing. I'm pretty sure the official dentist recommendation is to brush after meals, though. I say for the sake of consistency to do it for the babies at the same time everyday so it's part of the routine - can they brush at daycare? If not, I also vote for morning (more because of consistency than because it's what I do) after getting up.
I don't know when you first take a baby to the dentist (that's a really good question, though), but I'd suspect your dentist will have recommendations. (S)he might say it's totally fine for babies that young to brush first thing instead of after a meal, or perhaps will encourage you to get your daycare to help them brush.
My dentist said 3 is the age when kids should start getting their 2x yearly cleanings.
I would brush when you get up/before you leave the house since where they eat breakfast would be the variable that changes. Either way, I'd just suggest putting it in your routine so you don't forget.
Also - I believe drinking water or an apple after eating is good for the teeth after eating when you can't brush. Apples may be a challenge, but do they drink water with their breakfast?
