eating before glucose test - wwyd?

I have my glucose test at 8:15 in the morning, and all I remember my dr. saying is that I shouldn't have any carbs after midnight the night before the test.  I'm just wondering what effect it would have on the test if I ate an egg in the morning (or something else that didn't have carbs).  Does anyone who has already taken the test have any advice?

Re: eating before glucose test - wwyd?

  • Eat. My doc said "nothing sweet," and carbs definitely fits into that, so an egg should be ok. I took my test at 9:30 in the morning and I had managed to not eat since midnight (I was awake the whole time) but drank a butt load of water and chewed some sugar free gum. I think I'm in the clear as it's been over a week and they haven't called saying my labs sucked yet.

  • My doc said don't fast, just eat light.  I think an egg would be fine.

  • I was told to eat high protein with little to no carbs before going and the midwife suggested eating eggs for breakfast if I went early in the morning.

  • I was told just not to go crazy (I think the example I was given was not to eat pancakes, drink soda, and then eat candy).  The nurse suggested a piece of toast and an egg.  So I had a slice of whole wheat toast and an egg and all was fine.  (I took the test at 16 weeks and get to take it again at 28).  Good luck.

  • I ate normal before my test (both this pregnancy and last). Dr told me to eat normal.

My test was last Friday, in the afternoon, and they said eat lunch like usual and if I normally have a snack before the time of my test, to go ahead and take that too. I still passed my test.

  • My doctor said that I definitely SHOULD eat before the test. I was told just not to eat or drink anything sugary. :)

    almost exactly this.

My test was in the afternoon, and I ate lunch like I normally would.  I had a sub and chips and I still passed.

  • I was told to stay away from refined sugars. My test was at 3pm so I hate breakfast, a snack and then lunch before going and I passed.

  • I was told to eat normally... Once I down the drink though, no water, can't even brush your teeth.

The first two times I took it I was told to fast. (at 12 weeks and then again at 16 weeks).

I ate my normal breakfast this morning...

  • I was told to fast after midnight with DD.  I would think an egg would be fine though.

I was told to eat normally.   However, I didn't eat past 9 pm and only had an egg that morning.  I still failed but I also failed the 3 hr fasting one.  You should be fine eating an egg.

It's strange that everyone was told something different.

My appt is at 9am and I was told to eat a light breakfast, then nothing after the drink.

  • I did the 1 hour test at 20 weeks and was told no sugar but to eat a light protein lunch beforehand.  I am repeating the test at 28 weeks and was told the same.

  • My midwives said to eat and drink normally before the test, but once I drink the juice (they do white grape juice instead of the glucose drink) no more eating and only water to drink.

I think an egg would be fine.

  • I was specifically told to eat normally otherwise it would give false results. But I guess I would do what your doctor said, so an egg should be fine.

  • My test will be at 9am....I plan on eating something light as well...my problem is going to be the 2am hunger pangs.  The past three nights Ive gotten up and eaten some fresh fruit...strawberries, a bannana, etc.

  • My midwife recommended I eat an egg the morning of mine since I failed the one hour screen by one point with my first pregnancy.  I had to take it first trimester because both Type I and Type II diabetes run in my family on both sides.  I have to take it again at 28 weeks.
