I saw Maggee206's reply that she was old enough to have adopted from the first batch of Cabbage Patch Kids and it made me chuckle. I was 13 or 14 (I think they debuted in 1983/1984) and I REALLY wanted one. I was definitely too old for a "baby doll" but I got one -- and remember her name, Liza Kristin -- and then, a few months later, got a "preemie" named Neil Denton.
Almost 30 years later they're in my basement (in poor shape) and there are 2 others, that my dad bought as an "investment" but the packaging is damaged and I'm sure they're not worth sh!t.
But I did love my Cabbage Patch Kids. I even have photos of me holding them (again, around age 14).
Re: s/o Cabbage Patch Kids
I have mine, too! I think I was 9 or 10 when I got my first one. My mom stood in line for them & came home with one. And being the oldest, of course I felt I was entitled to it, lol. My middle sister & I got into a huge argument over it, my dad made us draw straws for it, and I ended up winning. My middle sister got one for Christmas (which I wanted, of course--I had a boy, she got a girl). My youngest sister got a knock-off CPK for Christmas to tide her over until my parents could get her a real one.
I have 2 CPK dolls (boy & a girl, Andrew & Bridget), a CPK Preemie (Cora May), and a Koosa (Sunshine). They're all in my basement. I'm debating whether or not I want to wash them up for my LO.
Lucky!
We took a trip to FAO Schwartz when I was 10 where I saw a life-like babydoll and declared that it was what I HAD to have that Christmas. I had been begging for a Cabbag Patch doll so my parents made me choose... and I chose the other doll.

I got one as a high school graduation gift in 1985. My mom had found someone who made cheerleader outfits for them, so mine is wearing my college colors, so I thought it was kinda cute. I still have her somewhere around here.
Since I was so old, I have no idea what her name is or anything. We didn't bond.

Just noticed this...
So it was 1982... I was 12. (Because I didn't have a "original" from 1978. I feel better being 12 and not 14. LOL

I LOVED my Cabbage Patch! I think she is still in my parents' attic, probably covered in dust. I renamed her though...didn't like her original name. I just remember her lovely baby-powder scent.
Now I want to go dig her up!
Oh, I remember back in 78 or 79, I saw one of the original Cabbage Patch dolls with the cloth faces, signed on the bottom by the maker.... I wanted one so badly. We were in NYC for something near Christmas time and they were at a store. My Mom said I could have one, except I would not get any other Christmas Presents. I think they were about $100 each!
Well, I told her, no thanks. When the plastic head ones came out I had several and I am ashamed to say that when I went to Spain on a high school trip, almost everyone bought one! I should dig out the photo where we lined them all up! (So silly, since I was about 15 then!!) I think they are still at my parent's house. And yes, the baby powder scent was what I remember the most!
even with a birthday next week... this post really makes me feel my age... I know I had one without the plastic head. Her name was Kori Kandy. Since she was AA I am guessing she wasn't from the very first batch, but definitely from the 80's because I also remember getting a Pound Puppy around the same time.
My mom also got me a 25th Anniversary Mattel Cabbage Patch kid a few Christmases ago.
