Kinda random WWYD ? re: milk

So, both my boys are suuuper skinny. Like 20% skinny. When T was younger he rarely drank milk, though he drinks it now. M drinks a slightly less than average amount. They just don't love it and it's hard to get it in them. Both boys eat a lot of high calcium foods and their low milk diet has been approved by my pedi due to the good variety of other foods they do eat.

Because they're so skinny, I have always given them whole milk. Now that they are 4.5 and 2, I am starting to wonder about switching. I already know what my pedi thinks about it but I am just wondering, as moms, what you guys think?

They're super skinny so they can use the fat. It doesn't make them gain weight but I wonder how skinny they would be with out it (and the full fat yogurt they eat most mornings). However, I wonder what might happen long term and/or if the whole milk is even making a difference.

 So WDYT?

  • I think whole milk is around 4% milkfat, so it's really only cut in half if you switch to 2%, instead.  I would keep them on the whole milk.   Even if they drink 1 glass a day, it's giving them a little extra fat/calories.  However, if the milk is going bad b/c they don't drink enough of it, and you only drink a certain kind - then just have them drink what you do, and I wouldn't worry about it.

  • WDYT? I give the boys whole milk and whole milk products.

Both boys are lurking around the 10%ile. Sean is on the heavier side of that. I don't think the milk hurts them or helps them weight-wise. I think they are skinny like my brothers were/are. Your brother is thin...

Sean drinks whole milk and nurses. Lucas drinks the same milk when he drinks it. We buy whole milk fat yogurt whenever we can; Lucas eats that every day. We try to buy pastured dairy, because we think that makes a difference.

This is an interesting article from the NYT on fat and what might really be at the root of Americans bulking up. It is some food for thought:

  • I'm just now switching E off of whole milk because the gap in her percentiles is finally closing. But when she had a 40 percentage point gap between height and weight, she got whole milk.

If you try to get them gain weight, I'd keep them on whole.

  • DD is on the small side too and we switched her to 1% (or 2%, whatever we happen to buy) when she was about 2. Pedi said she didn't need whole milk, she would be fine with whatever DH and I were drinking. It's been a while so I don't remember all the details but I want to say it had something to do with the extra cholesterol in whole milk?

  • Ian's always been around the 25% for weight and 75% for height.  We drink skim and I switched Ian from whole to 1-2% at 2yrs old (my HEB is frequently out of one or the other in the half-gallon size, so I just get whatever they have).

He is not a good eater and I felt like he was filling up on the milk fat and then not hungry enough to eat his real food, even though he only got about 12oz of it a day.  His appetite did increase when I switched him to the lower fat milk.
