3rd Trimester

Im scared, need advice please...

I was getting sharp pains in my lower back down the left side of my leg earlier which I of course knew was a siatica since I've felt them occasionally throughot my pregnancy. But as of 3 hours ago I feel numb from my thigh down to my toes. It's a very scary feeling and I'm  very concerned about what it could possibly be. I'm not one to call the doctor right away for every ache and pain but afer seeking advice from my mom she told me to call the doctor right away. He told me that it sounds like a siatica and that the baby is probobly just on a nerve. But this really does not seem like one. I'm extremely concerned right now. Has anyone felt this?

  • I have had a lot of the siatic pain stuff and I have had my leg go numb a few times but it's when i've sat or layed in a position too long. The pressure of sitting or laying a certain way may have made it just fall asleep. If you've been up moving around then I wouldn't know what the cause could be especially if it's been 3 straight hours. I hope you find the answer and i'm sorry you're going through that.

  • yes, I have been moving around a lot. I've been walking or laying down with my leg elevated. I'm not really sure what to do at this point.

CAREFUL walking if its numb, we're already more prone to tripping/falling when we are pregnant and cant see our feet.  Maybe massage it to see if you can get some bloodflow going---its not changing colors at all right? (pale/rosy/blueish?) Does it feel warmer or colder than normal?

I hope you feel better soon, I'd say if it doesn't improve/go away I'd call again-- maybe even just ask-a-nurse...you know what they say if it doesnt feel right our intution is our best indicator.

  • It sounds like when my sciatic nerve pain is really bad. The most helpful thing I've found is to lay on the opposite side. My left leg goes numb - so I lay on my right side.
  • It sounds like what happens to me when my sciatic nerve pain is acting up.

I hope you feel better soon!!

  • Thank you all so much. You've really eased my nerves. I will try lying on the opposite side and yes, I have been massaging it to try to getblood flowing. Was only scared that maybe it could be a clot of some sort. If it doesn't go away by tomorrow then I'll definately call the doctor again. For now I've taken a freezing cold drink of grape juice to try and get the baby moving and see if it ruly is just  the baby's positioning.

This was going to be my suggestion.  I have had sciatica issues throughout my pregnancy and just lately she has been very interested in my right hip.  I get a numbing pain in my thigh every once in a while.  It normally goes away when I change positions and make her change positions as well.

    Hope it gets better!

  • Try massaging your belly to get the baby to move around- I've been dealing with sciatica issues throughout my entire preg and massage in a clockwise motion(counter clockwise can mess with your belly)  really has helped, have your husband or SO massage if its too uncomfortable for you.  then a hot shower to sooth the pain.  Feel better soon!!
