anyone else's doc not getting bloodwork?

I called my OB-GYN yesterday to tell them about my BFP.  I already had an appt for an annual scheduled for Aug 11 (I just moved to a new state so I was establishing care with a new doc).  I called to see if they wanted to see me sooner to get a beta done.  They said they do not do bloodwork right away, that their tests are just as accurate as the home pregnancy tests, and if I've taken several positive HPTs (which I have) that they will see me between 6-8 weeks for a confirmation ultrasound.  Then after that you have your first OB visit where they do lots of tests, etc., and a nurse education visit.  The August 11 appt would have been 5 weeks 6 days per my FF calculated due date, so I moved it back a week to August 18.  I'm super excited about the ultrasound visit, but it seems like from reading this board that most people are getting bloodwork done now to confirm their pregnancy.  Has anyone else's doc said, no bloodwork now, I'll see you in a few weeks?

  • My doc does this.  They only do bloodwork if you have a history of m/c.

  • My doctor said "Has everything been going fine" I said yes and he said "congrats! We'll see you in 4 weeks"

    So, you're not alone!

  • My Dr. is not having me do bloodwork and I had a loss in May. In all honesty I am ok with it. If my betas weren't doubling there really wouldn't be anything I could do about it anyway. I am trying to remind myself that it's all out of my control and that I will be taking everything one day at a time.

  • yep, no bloodwork here either. The receptionist told me that they could get me in if I wanted a confirmation pee test. I did it with my first pregnancy, I went in, peed in a cup, and met with a nurse who gave me a few brochures and told me I was indeed pregnant. This time I decided to save myself the $25 co-pay, ya know what I mean?

  • My doctor is seeing me Monday for this pregnancy, but with my first, they didn't see me until 8 weeks.  I had actually never even heard of routine Beta testing until The Bump.  None of my local friends/family have had Betas tested unless they had previous miscarriages.

  • With DD my first appoint at 9 weeks was informational just with an RN. At 12 weeks we got "official" confirmation by hearing the h/b. Unless you have a previous history b/w isn't really necessary.

I work in a hospital lab, the pee test is literally the same thing as what you do at home. Add the urine and 2 lines = BFP lol.

  • I was surprised to find out that I can't see my OB until I'm at least 7 weeks. They told me the positive HPT was good enough for me to schedule my 1st visit and I didn't need to come in and confirm it. Strange, because they have changed their protocol since my last pregnancy. My youngest is going to be 4 in 2 weeks. I dont even get to see my OB at 7 weeks, I have to go in for a nurse appt for genetic counsiling and general paperwork. Then that nurse schedules my actual OB appt. I'm pretty annoyed with this because I have had a m/c in the past. It would be nice to have the bloodwork done now and then again at 7 weeks to see the progression... but they have decided to torture me instead. Tongue Tied

  • Yes, same for me.  My doctor will not see me until 8 weeks.  I tried to get in 2 days before 8 weeks and the receptionist said no.  She said it had to be 8 weeks.  I thought that was a little strict but I get why they do it.  So yeah, I will be thinking about it till I see a doctor.

  • I'm getting mine done because this is an IVF cycle.  I have to take supplemental progesterone and estradiol as part of the IVF so they have to monitor all my hormone levels.  I also have a history of ectopic pregnancies so even if this wasn't an ivf cycle, they would still monitor me to look out for another tubal.

With my first three, before I ever had any complications, they didn't see me until 8 weeks.

  • I am because I have had two m/cs and am seeing an RE.  With my first PG though they didn't see me until 6 weeks or so.  Sometime around 8 weeks seems to be standard, be glad you don't have a reason for early monitoring! ;) H&H 9 months to you!

  • Thanks, guys!  Makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one.  :)  My best friend thought it was unusual that they would do an u/s between 6-8 weeks, she said she didn't get hers until 10 weeks with both pregnancies!  So I guess that's something to be thankful for!
