Pregnant after IF

Leg cramps-help

I've gotten charlie horses in my legs before and cramps in the arch of my foot even before being pregnant. Last night I sat straight up in bed almost crying bc my right calf was in full on spasm! DH had to help rub it out, you could feel the veins and everything! My leg feels bruised this morning.

I know bananas are good to alleviate cramps and I eat them all the time but any other advice? It was no fun and I don't want it to happen again.

Re: Leg cramps-help

  • Flex your foot during the cramp. Flexing stops mine immediately. Good luck. They are super painful.

I agree with the flexing, and also drink tons of water!

  • I started to experience these about a week ago or so and they are painful!! I almost feel paralyzed from the pain for a second or two. The advice I got was drink lots of water and flex during the spasm and hopefully that helps.

  • leg cramps in pregnancy are more likely caused by the fact that more blood is flowing to your uterus and less to your extremities, so it's probably not a lack of potassium :)

to help avoid them, while you're sitting stick your legs out and turn your ankles/feet clockwise like 10 times, then counter-clockwise the same. if you do get one, do what ashkonwiler said.

i got one nasty cramp about 6 weeks ago and my leg hurt for days. i do that ankle exercise about once a day now and haven't had one since.

    hope that helps!

  • I had super painful cramps in both my calfs yesterday morning. I woke up yelling they hurt so bad. My legs are really sore today too. I brought a banana today, maybe that will help? My baby book says to increase water and to avoid packaged food. I don't know how much that will help though. You're right, leg cramps = no fun.
