Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What kind of table foods is LO getting?

Koltyn is a little over 8.5 months and I am reading alot about babies eating table food already (like whatever we eat, they eat). Koltyn has 3 teeth, but they aren't all the way in yet. I guess I am terrified of him choking? He LOVES puffs, but palms them instead of picking them up so he hasn't figured out how to feed them to himself yet. If you are giving table foods regularly or even just occasionally, what all are you giving to LO?

  • L gets bits of pretty much everything we eat excluding rare cooked meat, spicy food, nuts, fried food, sweets (well, we've occasionally given him a taste of our ice creams) and junk food

he only has 2 half teeth but it doesn't matter because he just sucks on things and "chews" them with his gums

  • I share your concerns about table food, so DD gets purees primarily but we offer her tiny pieces of what we eat.  Some other favorites are chunks of cheese, cheerios, cottage cheese, toast with fruit puree spread on it, small pieces of very ripe fruit, lentils/beans etc.  She also palms it but has gotten pretty efficient.
  • The teeth they get in the first year are not going to help with chewing/choking. The teeth we chew with are molars, and those don't come in until well after a year.  They can chew just fine with their gums.

E has gotten table food since about 6.5 months old.  She loves it and picked up self-feeding really easily.  She gets literally everything we are eating, minus nuts & honey. Like today for lunch she had meatloaf, green beans, strawberries, and blue berries.

We cut it up into small, bite-sized pieces and allow her to feed herself.  Start with mushy stuff (like steamed green beans, bananas, avacado) and he should do great!

  • We started with avocado and banana chunks.  Now we give sweet potato cubes, organic puffs, shredded chicken and turkey and other little bits of what we are eating for dinner.  Just cube it up small.

He still eats oatmeal and fruit puree for breakfast and I send mashed veggies to daycare.  Im not quite comfy with sending finger foods to daycare yet.
