Preemies

Pitcher of NeoSure ??

I purchased Dr. Brown's Mixing Pitcher with the intention of preparing Sophia's formula for the day and storing in the fridge to be used as needed.  Checking out Similac's website they have directions on preparing formula in such a manner.  It did however state that Neosure, Alimentum, and Elecare should not be prepared this way.

I was wondering if anyone prepares their Neosure this way?  Does it loose nutrients if it's prepared ahead of time??  Are they worried about bacteria growth with the preemies??  Just wondering??  Guess I'll stick with making one bottle at a time.

Re: Pitcher of NeoSure ??

  • The can of neosure says when it is mixed that it should be used in 24hrs.  Not sure why it would vary pitcher vs. bottle.  We make Gabe's bottles the night before (6 breast milk 2 neosure).  Haven't had any issues with it.

  • I'm not sure - we definitely made ahead of time when LO was on thickened feeds. He was on enfacare but id imagine ita the same. Another option, once LO is consistently taking a reliable amount (which I know can take awhile in the beginning) is to premeasure the water in the bottles, and premeasure formula in one of those dispensers that have three sections, and just mix right before using. This way you don't have to heat up the milk (if LO will take room temp). Good luck!

I never heard that.  I've always mixed a pitcher of Neosure for the day ever since J's been EFF.  There's never been a problem with it, and on the can it says it needs to be used within 24 hours.

I'm not sure where you found on the Similac site that you can't mix large quantities; I found this on the Neosure page:

Larger Size Mixing Instructions To make a larger amount of formula using a standard measuring cup, follow these steps: Add 1 unpacked, level measuring cup (NOT the enclosed scoop) of powder (100 g) to 21 fl oz of water. To maintain freshness, pour prepared formula into individual feeding bottles. Cap and store in refrigerator; feed within 24 hours.
I can see what they're saying about freshness, and sometimes as you get close to that 24 hour mark, it may not be as fresh.
Like PP said, try mixing small amounts to start until you have an idea of what she'll consistently take (it took J a little while to level off).  Once you know your LO will need to take more, gradually increase the amount you'll mix.  GL, and HTH!  Smile

This exactly! They even had the instructions posted on A's fridge in the NICU... we currently do this at home and it makes like soooo much easier!

  • We always made pitchers while on Neosure, Enfacare, and now with regular Enfamil.  We never had a problem getting through a pitcher (or two!) during 24 hours but if your LO is a less hungry baby I would make a few ounces less then they normally eat in 24 hours so you can be sure you would go through it in less than 24 hours.

    Good luck!

We've been using the Dr. Brown's pitcher to mix LO's NeoSure since he came home from the NICU.  Instead of doing the 21 oz with 1 cup I just did one scoop per two ounces - the same way you'd make a bottle.  I did it that way because LO wasn't taking much volume at first.

And we have to make it in a pitcher now because we're doing the 24 calorie formula for the NeoSure so I have to make a whole batch at once.

  • I've never had any problems and have been making pitchers since the day she was home!
