Re: Repost: WTF? Can I get an Old Fart Ban too?

  • I'm ok with it in certain situations.  For example expensive restaurants, spas, things like that.  If I spend a bunch of money to get a babysitter then a bunch of money for a really nice dinner I don't want to have to listen/deal with someone else?s ill behaved kids.

But in general kids are a part of life and people need to suck it up.  Plus, if kids never go anywhere how will they learn how to behave?

  • I think this is an unfortunate consequence of how some people choose to parent their children.  Personally I don't think its possible to reason with a child under the age of 5.  Before then, kids really are not able to logically think through your reasoning for behaving/stopping crying/ending tantrum with an outcome other than what they initially wanted.

Also, I think parents need to understand their childs limits.  O is in general a happy baby and will sit in a high chair and eat puffs without so much as a peep in a restaurant.  If he were a different baby that needed to be held/walked/entertained constantly then I would reconsider bringing him places with us or abstain all together and get a babysitter.

Yes I agree 100% with this whole statement, especially the last part. Whenever I bring Elliott to dinner, it's always somewhere kid-friendly, and around 5:30. If you're headed out to somewhere like Red Robin, before 8pm, expect to be surrounded by noisy kids.

    Edit: clarification

  • Wow, thats just insane! I do agree with high end restaurants, spas (why would a kid be there anyways??), etc.  but from grocery stores, airplanes, movie theathers?  PLEASE that's just over board!  I RARELY can get to the alone, almost always have one or both boys with me.  I am probably one of those people that would raise all kind of hell if I went some place (kids included) just to find out that kids under 6 aren't allowed.  My parents always would take us out to the car if we were misbehaving in public (98% of time just my brother being led out by my dad) ...I would do the same thing with my kids if necessary.  I think its extremely important to start as young as possible that behaving in public is important ...w/exception to kid based places - then just go crazy and have some fun acting like a kid with your kid(s)

  • I think it's a sad state of affairs when parents can't realize that there are innappropriate places to take their children. The 3 year in the Harry Potter show I went to? DID NOT BELONG. Not an appropriate movie for a 3 year, the kid was terrified and screaming. It's a scary movie!

A restaurant on a Saturday night that's high high end, linen table clothes, candlelight and all that jazz? Don't bring your 2 year old who is going to throw a fit and let him run around between all the tables and look at him like he's just the cutest thing ever. He's not and you are ruining it for everyone else.

I think it's an entitlement attitude that their lives shouldn't have to change in the least even though they've made the decision to have a kid. Yep, your life has to change and you probably shouldn't be dragging your kid to an 8 pm candlelit dinner in a swanky restaurant.

The grocery store is beyond ridiculous. Though admittedly, I had to once scold some kids who were poking their fingers into my package of ground meat that was on the conveyor, after I asked their mother politely to have her children keep their hands off my food and she ignored me.

  • It's sad that it has to come to this because parents aren't the disciplinarians they need to be. I remember taking my then 2.5-year-old nephew to Friendly's for dinner. Totally a kid-friendly restaurant but he kept crawling under the table and not wanting to eat...so I asked the waitress to box up our food and took him home. He wasn't bothering other people but he wasn't acting appropriately so I removed him from the situation. Not that hard! I never would have taken him to a fancy restaurant and don't know why some people would.

On the other hand, my mom likes to tell me the story of when I was 2 and we were traveling. They stopped at a restaurant and I was screaming so much that my dad got frustrated and walked out (I'm sure he was embarrassed, too). My mom, knowing full well that I was hungry, stayed and once the waitress brought some crackers I was totally fine. So I wasn't throwing a tantrum...I was really hungry! I'm sure to other patrons I was obnoxious but my mom knew I needed food in my belly so she had no choice but to wait so we could eat. So there's also a difference between a small child acting out inappropriately and a small child acting out because they're hungry/tired/whatever. I think rather than banning children altogether, restaurants/stores/theaters/etc, should do it on a case-by-case basis and exercise their right to ask people to leave if they're disruptive.

ITA with this. I think it's easier to just make the whole ban... I work in a restaurant that is "family friendly" but I sometimes wish we could kick people out. We had one kid screaming so loud the other day in the middle of the restaurant that one table got up and moved themselves into a different dining room... then no one saw they were there (it was closed down for the night because it was late and we didn't have enough servers to staff it) and they waited forever and then got mad.

PLUS, as a server, I get annoyed when parents bring kid food (puffs, cheerios, etc,) and let kids make a HUGE mess that I have to clean up, but they don't leave a tip that includes the extra work I have to do for their kid because "his food's not on the bill."
