Have any of you lovely ladies done this? It is included as part of my doula's fee and I thinking about trying it. I have read and heard good things, but just looking for some real life feedback.

I think you will get a better response on the Natural birth board. I did not do this but I have heard great things about it! One of my very good friends did this after her birth (actually, she drank hers straight up in a strawberry smoothie her MW made for her). She had pp depression with her first but swears she didn't even get the blues the time she did the placenta consumption!
Try posting on the other board and see what responses you get.

She said it is super good for milk supply, healing, bleeding, emotions, and energy.
I said, "I bet your kitchen is interesting!" She said her roommates are totally weirded out. I cannot imagine why! LOL!
If you think about it - all mammals eat their placentas...

I had never heard of this before but went and read Davez's link. Very interesting. It makes sense with all the hormones. I'm curious to see what people's first hand experience is with it - especially those that didn't do this with previous pregnancies and the differences.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!
BFP with no treatment!
I had never heard of this before until my prenatal yoga class that I took with Jake and starting again tonight actually! It's a very earthy/cruncy kind of class but more to just inform then Make people do things that they don't want to do..
Anyway my teacher told us all about this. And it was actually interesting but learned that in some states/conties it's illegal to eat or take home a placenta. LIke in Miami/Dade you can't do it. I would just make sure that it's something legal. Otherwise the benifits sound wonderful.
Now, I've only ever had my one child, so I can't really tell you if it made "a difference" because I have nothing to compare to, but I think I had a pretty easy post-partum and I'm a really emotional girl.
The "reconsumption" of the hormones made a lot of sense to me, and I was really afraid of PPD so I figured I'd do what I could to cut that possibility. There are so many cultures where placenta consumption is ritual and there are a lot of women who swear by it. I figured that it couldn't hurt, and it might help, so why not.
I also kind of thought it was cool.... (yes, I'm a science nerd) ... and I was fascinated by seeing it.
Now, I don't think I could "cook it and eat it" like some do, but the pills were easy-peasy and I would definitely do it again.
My mom thought I was joking when I told her I was going to do it.... but she came around....
I didn't encapsulate, I just....ummmm......went with fresh? Only a portion, within an hour of the birth. It helps with PP bleeding/ contractions etc. It was fine.
I would definitely do it, why not?
details, details! did you go the smoothie route?

Agreed!!! One question - any weird aftertaste? You know, like fish burps from fish oil/dha?

Well, I had my last daughter in a state where they were very willing to show/ give me the placenta, which I think makes a difference here. Also, my OB was very supportive of it. I had a c/s, and when I was back in recovery my OB brought it in (in a covered dish thingingy) and asked if I wanted it. I said I would only have a piece, so he just cut a bit off (about the size of a snack size candy bar) and I popped it in my mouth. It just sat in the side of my mouth for a while, then it was soft enough to swallow. Oh WOW do I feel weird and vulnerable writing this out....haha!
While I do think the benefits of eating the whole thing over a period of time is better, I was happy enough to have the immediate effects to control PP bleeding. If I could have encapsulated, I would have.
WOW! I am in awe! You rock! Thanks for sharing. I think I shall stick to encapsulation
