Highchair needed?

Trying to figure out what essentials I need to start buying/looking into. Everything I read talks about the big ticket items being a crib, changing station, car seat, and stroller.

What about a high chair? Is it necessary? At what age do you put the baby in a high chair? Are there any alternatives to a high chair?

Re: Highchair needed?

  • I think I'm going to try to skip the high chair.  For the first few months they are either breast feeding or on the bottle. and then after that I think i'm going to try for a really good booster seat.  My sister bought a high chair for her son and NEVER used it.

We've used our high chair nearly daily since DS was 5 months old.  We have the Fisher Price Space Saver.  It reclines for young babies who are just starting solids and it converts into a booster.

I couldn't live without it.  It's nice when baby is mobile and you need to keep him safe and confined for a few minutes (to pee, change a load of laundry, etc). I still strap him in there sometimes when I need to have the oven open for awhile to check on dinner or run outside to check on the grill.

  • Babies won't need a high chair until you start feeding them around 6 months. We never had a proper high chair, we just had one of the booster chairs that attaches to the dining chair. It saves room and the child can use it from 6 months-2ish years.
  • I didn't buy one for a while after DS was born, because he couldn't use it until he could sit up. We used the Bumbo with the tray for a LONG time. The only reason I bought a high chair is because we have a tall table... otherwise I would have bought a booster-style one that goes on your chairs.

There was a window of time it was helpful to strap him into the high chair with a snack while I cooked dinner or cleaned up the kitchen, but definitely not something worth spending a ton on.

We didn't need the highchair with DS until he was about 3mo old when he started on rice or oatmeal cereal 1x/day.  I love the highchair because it has a lot more support.  BUT I know people who used the Bumbo chair with the tray and it worked just fine as well.  I still use the highchair and DS is almost 2 but we also have a booster seat for when he eats at the table with us.

  • I don't plan on buying one until after baby's born, unless I find a smokin' hot deal! They wouldn't really be able to use it until they can sit upright unassisted anyway...

I agree w/you. I'm going to register for the FP Space Saver high chair for the same reasons you mentioned. I also like the idea of being able to feed the baby AT the table and start incorporating good habits early on. Even though I have the space for a traditonal high chair, why bother, they take up too much space and they can get pretty expensive too. The FP Space Saver is cute, compact, safe, and very affordable.

  • You'll probably need one, but not until 6 months old which is a year from now.  I registered for one for DD but returned it because our kitchen at the time was so small there was no room for it.  I got a Stokke instead, but when I bought it I was glad to take DD to the store and actually put her in the different chairs.  The Svan I was originally going to get wasn't comfy for her at all.
