Trying to figure out what essentials I need to start buying/looking into. Everything I read talks about the big ticket items being a crib, changing station, car seat, and stroller.
What about a high chair? Is it necessary? At what age do you put the baby in a high chair? Are there any alternatives to a high chair?
Re: Highchair needed?
We've used our high chair nearly daily since DS was 5 months old. We have the Fisher Price Space Saver. It reclines for young babies who are just starting solids and it converts into a booster.
I couldn't live without it. It's nice when baby is mobile and you need to keep him safe and confined for a few minutes (to pee, change a load of laundry, etc). I still strap him in there sometimes when I need to have the oven open for awhile to check on dinner or run outside to check on the grill.
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
I didn't buy one for a while after DS was born, because he couldn't use it until he could sit up. We used the Bumbo with the tray for a LONG time. The only reason I bought a high chair is because we have a tall table... otherwise I would have bought a booster-style one that goes on your chairs.
There was a window of time it was helpful to strap him into the high chair with a snack while I cooked dinner or cleaned up the kitchen, but definitely not something worth spending a ton on.
I agree w/you. I'm going to register for the FP Space Saver high chair for the same reasons you mentioned. I also like the idea of being able to feed the baby AT the table and start incorporating good habits early on. Even though I have the space for a traditonal high chair, why bother, they take up too much space and they can get pretty expensive too. The FP Space Saver is cute, compact, safe, and very affordable.
