3rd Trimester

Anyone pass 3hr glucose and test positive for GD later in pregnancy?

Hi ladies,

So I have been doing a little research.  I passed my 3hr Glucose, but one of the numbers was out of range.  I read on-line that if one # is out of range and you are considered high risk (my whole family is diabetic) that you should be tested again between 32 and 34.  I went for a growth scan yesterday and my baby is measuring 6.5lbs at 34 and 3 with an AFI of 26cm.  I really wonder if I have developed GD since I took my 3hr at  29 weeks.  I wanted to know if this happened to anyone else.  I think I am going to make my doc retest me so we can rule out this out as a possible cause for my increased AFI.  Thoughts?

  • That would be me. I passed the 3 hour at 30 weeks with one failed number. We had an ultrasound at 30 weeks because of a low placenta and she was measuring in the 60th percentile.

I went back to a 36 week ultrasound to check for a breech baby and baby was over the 90th percentile.

They retested me at 36 weeks and I failed. I was really upset that I was told I passed and went on eating like normal with no retesting... meanwhile she was growing too quickly. Now I am watching my sugars and testing after each meal- but the damage has been done. We are looking at a c-section and a very large baby that could have under developed lungs. I felt like I could have controlled this if I would have known.

My mom has diabetes so I should have been more on it from the beginning.  I would recommend if you are worried that you see if you can do a test around 34 weeks.

  • That would be me as well. With DD I passed the 3 hour test, and when DD was born she was 8Ibs even at 37 wks. They tested her blood sugar, and she was through the roof. They had no idea why it was through the roof, and then they tested my sugars, and mine was around 400 or so. My daughter had some significant health issues after birth because my GD went undiagnosed. Follow your instincts, and have them retest you!

  • I just replied to your post in HR, but here it is again:

With my second pg, I passed the 3hr GTT, but I suspect I developed GD later.  I was never diagnosed or retested, but my ds was born weighing 10lbs 1oz at 37wks 6days.  I developed GD with two subsequent pgs, which leads me to the same conclusion that I probably had it before and went undiagnosed and uncontrolled, leading to a very large baby.

It can't hurt to get retested.  Better to retest and have it diagnosed and controlled than to not know you have it and leave it uncontrolled.  I have GD now and at my growth scan my baby also measured 6.5lbs at 34wks.  They're concerned about me having another 10lber even though we are controlling my GD well.  Did your baby's belly measure large?  My baby's head was average size and belly measured large.  They told me this is "classic" for a GD baby.

I don't want to scare you... I was still able to vaginally deliver my 10lb ds, but I'd rather not do it again if I don't have to.

  • I tested negative at 32 weeks and 34 weeks. Tested positive at 37 weeks. Baby came at 38 weeks. I was gaining a lot of weight and most people in my family had GD and are diabetic so I kept making them retest me.

  • I feel like I should have been told that I should still watch my carb and sugar intake being that I failed 1 part of the 3 hr given my extensive family history of diabetes and now I am carrying this really big baby and I am so upset with myself.  My grandmother has an extra glucometer and she is bringing it over today and I am going to test my sugar to see what I come up with.  Thank you ladies for your response.  I will keep you posted on what I discover.

  • With my last pregnancy, I failed the fasting value and the other 3 values were borderline. At the time I was treated at a military medical facility and failing the fasting was not an automatic fail like it is with my civilian doctor now. So they didn't treat it. This time I was tested early due to PCOS and a strong family history of diabetes. I failed at 13 weeks. So there was a lot of arguing if I was type II before pregnancy until they received those test results from my previous pregnancy. I would ask to be retested if I were you.

  • We think that's what happend with my daughter, when I was pregnant with her.  She was 8lbs 3oz and born at 37 weeks.  Only 1 of my numbers was out of range on my 3 hr glucose test and the rest of the numbers were borderline.  The dietician I have been working with this pregnancy, since I did get diagnosed with GD, believes that I did develop GD later on but it was never caught.  I would ask your Dr to retest.
