Toddlers: 24 Months+

If you use rewards for PTing

How long will you continue? We're on day 3 of PT and DS is doing really well, I'm just wondering how long I should be using the "rewards" as an incentive.

Re: If you use rewards for PTing

  • We stuck with rewards (in our daughter's case, an M&M or a Hershey Kiss) until she would go on her own and not think to ask for one anymore. I'm zero help in that I can't remember how long that went on for, but it didn't seem excessive by any measure. In fact, when she began to go off-track several months in, we reinstated the treats that she'd forgotten about, and that seemed to help again. Potty training -- ugh.

  • We used stickers with DD.  I offered them every time for the first 2 weeks.  It was probably another 2 weeks after that, that she would remind me almost every time.  I think about 2-3 weeks after that (so 6-7 total) was when she had stopped asking for them at all.
  • I didn't have a time frame. We used jelly beans. I restocked them 2x I believe. He just stopped asking for them and I never brought it up.

We are still using rewards for pooping. He's been pee PT since January but we're finally having poop success. We've pulled out everything in the book for poop and it really just has to come with his time. Just tonight he picked a dum-dum but he had to put it aside for tomorrow because he pooped right before bed. We will continue the rewards until he forgets about them.

  • DS only gets a reward these days when HE remembers to ask for one.  Otherwise, if we can just get away with praise, that's what we'll do.

1/5 times he gets a treat.

  • We only did it for the first week. DS would put money (mostly change) in his piggy bank. MIL gave DS money for his first pee and poop on the potty.

  • we originally were giving a berry (like a raspberry or blackberry or something) each time instead of candy etc.  eventually, after a few weeks, we explained to her if she stays dry all day, she gets a sticker on her sticker chart.  and after so many stickers she gets to pick a prize.  we are still doing this about 3 months later... but its now like 10 stickers or something to get a prize.  prizes range from dollar store items to a nice book or toy.

    good luck!
