Thoughts on boy name Ross?

I like the name, but the #1 association for me is Ross from friends, who was kind of a wimp. Not sure I want a potential son to be unfairly viewed as such. Plus DS is Cal (Callum), which is a pretty strong name given the hard consonant, so I wonder if they even go together?

It's a family name of DH's, as is Hudson, and I think Ross Hudson sounds pretty darn cool.

Wondering how the name comes across to the general public (that would be you)...?

I think Ross is a fine name. Friends is already an old show and will be even older when your son goes to school. It will be in reruns but will his friends be watching it? Probably not.

Very good point! I guess I was wondering if that character was a good representation of the general association with that name. Not so much that kids of his generation would associate the name with the show. If that makes sense?

Although I did watch Friends a lot when it was on, I don't even think of the show when I hear Ross. I love the name b/c it's my brother's mn and my SO's uncle and great grandpa's name and they are all great, strong men. Also, Callum and Ross are both Scottish names which I like although that may not matter to you. our last name is Scottish and Ross is one of our 2 choices for a mn. Go for it!

This is great to hear! And yes, I did know they were both Scottish/Gaelic names, and I think they go together beautifully in that respect!

I think it's a nice name. We have a good friend, Ross. He's an awesome guy, really genuine, he's an awesome f/s mountain biker and an amazing skiier.

I think it is a good name and goes with your other children's. It is very popular in Scotland, when I lived there I heard it all the time.

I still watch Friends, and I didn't make the connection until you mentioned it. Like a pp said, it is an older show. People are probably not going to think about it, (unless your last name happens to be Geller!) certainly not his generation.

I don't think of Friends right away, it just sounds like a good solid name. And IMO, Ross Hudson sounds like a really cool name! You should go with it if you guys like it, dont worry about the Friends thing

I'm sure a lot of us new moms are in the generation that grew up with Friends. I do think of Ross from Friends, but it's a great name and Ross Hudson sounds cool. Once you name your child that, I don't think people will associate him with Friends- he'll have his own identity.

I like it a lot, but it's on my middle name list. I generally do not prefer one syllable first names for my own kids. (Just my preference).

Ross Hudson sounds a lot like Rock Hudson. Kids probably won't make that connection though.

Ross is DS's middle name (FN Nolan). It's also my grandpa's MN. I definitely loved it enough to use as a first name, but our last name is one syllable, so I wanted a longer first name. I think Ross is a strong, classic name that is underused.
