Solids Strike - Suggestions Needed

LO was finally doing well with solids. He'd eat 4 oz, 3 times a day. We were using the little Gerber jars or sometimes mash something up. Last Tuesday he woke up sick. Pink eye. He was put on drops and an anti-biotic. He was feeling better on Thursday, back to his old happy self except for one thing...SOLIDS. Won't open his mouth. Turns his head. Pushes the spoon away. He definitely has an interest in my food, but not his. Ever time I gave him table food, even in the smallest size, he still gags and throws up. I've broken Puffs apart so they are smaller. Mum Mums. So many things. Any suggestions on either 1.) how to get him to eat from the spoon again or 2.) let him eat table food w/out gaging.

 Thank you!!!

  • Give him bigger pieces.  The small pieces are too hard to control in his mouth.

  • Just keep offering the finger foods...with my twins it was like a light switch went on. One day gagging, the next day eating everything. Cheerios helped the most i think because they had to chew them rather than the puffs. You could keep attempting purees but at that age i would really just move on to table food.

  • Have you tried the food from a pouch with the cap on top? DS LOVES them. He can suck them down in NO TIME!! He refuses everything on a spoon except yogurt. He does fine with finger foods, but I've found that he loves to suck down these pouches for purees. Just a thought.
  • I agree with PP about giving bigger pieces...if it's to small my DD won't touch it or it just ends up in her lap.  Not that a lot doesn't but she is more likely to grab it if it's bigger.  She would rather chew a chunk off (like banana's or watermelon).  Last night she ate Spaghetti and 2 meatballs for the first time...cut up into chunks of course.  I just keep trying with most things and she eventually eats it.  So like another poster said also keep trying.  We still have to give baby food but we are incorporating more and more what we eat.  She likes yogurt, cottage cheese, applesauce, pancakes, french toast, eggs, cheerios and the list is growing.  It's harder than I thought but you just have to keep at it.

  • Mine started refusing to be spoon-fed purees around 7.5 months. We had to ditch the purees and go to table food exclusively. Give bigger pieces and just keep offering. Your LO will eventually catch on.

  • Ditto what PPs said. Also, if you aren't already, try feeding him at the same time that you eat. And don't be afraid to give him table food. Mashed potatoes (use milk to make them a little less stiff), string cheese, noodles...those are all big hits at my house.
