Toddlers: 24 Months+

If you give your LO juice

Has your kid turned into a juice or sweets freak?

I see people say they want to avoid juice b/c they don't want their LO to develop at "taste" for it, etc. which I get and I had that attitude when DD was younger.  But, now, she gets juice almost every day at daycare - but she still asks for milk or water about 90% of the tiem when given the choice.

I give her juice if we are out and about somewhere b/c its easier to carry juice boxes and we do chocolate milk as special treat.  I even give her sips of my coke or DH's iced tea when we're out at lunch or dinner, but she rarely, rarely asks for anything sweet at all.

  • We didn't give DD juice until a few months ago and she already loved sweets. She rarely gets them but is very excited when we're going to a party bc she knows cake will be there. We started giving juice (diluted) in the last few months bc her calories were low and she was drinking tons of water due to learning how to use a cup.

  • LOL, no.  They get juice (watered down half and half) probably 3-5 times a week.  It's never been a big deal.  They also get chocolate milk on rare occasion, and sips of whatever DH and I are drinking at times.  They don't have any problems drinking plain water daily, or having regular milk 90% of the time.  If they do ask for juice or chocolate milk and I say no, that's the end of it.  I don't think either of them have ever thrown a tantrum over not getting sweets/juice (and DS has been the type to throw a tantrum over absolutely NOTHING before).

They do absolutely LOVE candy and chocolate, but they rarely get it, and they hardly ever even ask for it.  They know it's just the occasional treat, and it's not a big deal for me to say no when they do ask.

That said, I'm sure there are some kids out there who would refuse to eat or drink anything else if they have juice or candy, but I think that percentage of children is very very low.

  • If we give juice, he gets either Mots for Tots, or Gerber toddler juice.  He does get a little juice at daycare, but that's really it.  He used to get it home, but dh and I quit buying it, after he would start throwing his cup if it didn't have juice in it.   Personally, I don't have anything against juice or sweets for that matter.  I have noticed however, ds doesn't throw a raving tantrum after a banana, like he does after a cookie.

  • Nope.  She has juice every day and a lot of times will ask for milk or water.

  • they get juice once a day and still ask for milk and water (well, ice water) all the time...and they hardly ever have candy/cookies....well they will tell you their granola bar is a cookie and they have gotten the occassional twizzler ...but that's it...and that is only very recently...
  • DD likes sweets anyway, with or without juice.

She has juice at daycare sometimes (not daily) and at home she gets water, milk, or her "juice-water"...which is 50/50 water and Gatorade.

  • Nope, my DS gets watered down juice but also loves milk and water. He does like sweets too, but we just watch how much we give him. It's probably because I'm a sweetaholic and share with him from time to time.

My kid loves ALL food except for vegis. She favors fresh fruit but I don't think it has anything to do w/ juice.  She prefers milk over juice unless it's in a juice box form.

  • I don't think one could really correlate the juice drinking to a toddler wanting cookies or cake. They just like what tastes good!

  • LO drinks juice with every meal and snack, but he also drinks a fair bit of milk too.  He is a VERY picky eater and the only way I can seem to get any veggies into him is via "V8 Fusion" juice, so that's what we go with.  LO likes sweet things, but given a choice, he'd rather have salty potato chips than sweet cookies.
  • No, he still mostly drinks milk and water.  Sometimes he will ask for juice but I only give him the choice of milk or water.

  • No.  I've been giving him watered down juice with breakfast for awhile now, and he likes it, but he still drinks milk or water the rest of the day.

  • I have gave her juice since she was 6 months old- diluted gerber juices, mostly, until 18 months or so. Now I give her other juices. She isn't a sweet freak or anything either :)

This! I've been recently getting the V8 Fusion LIGHT to cut down on sugar but it still has one serving fruit and one serving veggies per 8oz.

DS gets one cup a day, usually with dinner.

DS has gotten 1-2 oz juice cut with 7-8oz water in his sippy for months. He's not a big sweets kid unless you count fruit. He rarely gets straight juice. If we feel he isn't drinking enough or he's a bit constipated, we up the juice ratio.

For sweets, if he's given an option of fruit or say, a cookie, or candy he always chooses the fruit. not if it's a cupcake or icecream, they almost always win out over the fruit or he'll eat a couple bites of the "treat" and then finish up with the fruit.

He's never had soda or tea and this Easter was his 1st taste of chocolate. he may get a taste of it here or there, but he doesn't fuss if we have it and he doesn't. Fruit is another story. He raids the fridge for berries and sometimes cheese.
