Maine Babies

My random question of the day...

So what are the hospital gowns like?  On one hand, I don't want to take anything of my own since I know that things can be a bit yucky for the first few days and I'd have to buy gowns since I don't have any.  But I don't want to have to worry about my butt hanging out in all of its mesh pantied glory if I get up to take care of the baby or move around the room at all. Do the gowns close in the back?

Re: My random question of the day...

  • My junk was hanging out mesh panties and all one day (our room was across from the nurses station) but to be really honest....by that point I didn't care.  They tie up top but that was about it.  I also have much more to hang out than you!  I did buy two nursing nightgowns that were not very expensive - I wore one.  It didn't get ruined.  Things are a bit yucky the first few days but the giganto pads they give you to put in the mesh panties keep everything contained.

  • I think it depends on the hospital.  The gowns at the hospital where I delivered did not close entirely in the back, so I wore a crappy robe that I bought at Target.  In fact, the robe didn't get all nastied up and I still use it often for nursing.
  • I can't believe you are so close!

FWIW, I stayed in the hospital gown.  My gown tied in the back and I just clutched it when I would get up to keep anything from hanging out.  They also gave me a robe so that helped a lot, especially when there were visitors or when I went to any of the post partum classes.  I had packed clothes, but didn't get dressed until the day I was discharged.

Honestly, even though they got me out of bed the day after Kate was born (c-section), I wasn't getting up to take care of her (DH or my mom would bring her to me)....just to use the bathroom and amble around a bit as part of the recovery.  My BP was really high so this may have contributed to the overall discomfort and how crappy I felt.

  • I let my mesh-pantied ass just hang out for the world to see.  I brought lots of different clothes to wear in the hospital and just wore the hospital gown the whole time.  Mostly it was because I was lazy and didn't feel like putting on my own clothes!  Things were really not that messy (nowhere near as messy as I thought they would be) and if you wear a nightgown of your own, you could just hike it up under the blanket and sit on the blue pad.  I did love having the warm socks I brought from home.  Side note: My hospital had frozen diapers they gave me instead of pads and it was the most amazing experience ever.

Once I came home, I have loved the gigantic granny panties that I bought.  They're big enough to acommodate the 4-inch thick pads I've been wearing and still be loose enough to let things air out and prevent rubbing.

Long story short:  I was just fine in the hospital gown and wish I hadn't spent the money on a robe and pajamas to wear there.

  • I DESPISED the hospital gowns and I'm not usually very picky. They buttoned on the shoulders and were impossible to do and undo with one hand. (I had an IV in one arm due to my hemorrage.) I bought a robe a few days before I delivered and was sooooooooooooooo glad I did! I basically wore my nursing tanks and yoga pants with my robe over it. Worked great for me. And I still love my robe. I basically live in it!!!

    GL to you!!!!?

  • My gown closed in the back.  I only wore it the first day, not because I cared but it was so much harder to bf in.  I ended up in a pair of mh's boxers haha (he is a lot bigger than me so they easily fit over everything) and a nursing pjs top I got from Motherhood maternity.  It was just so much easier to nurse.

  • At my hospital they tie by the shoulder then down by my waist.  When we had lots of visitors I sometimes put one on one way and then another one the other way so I can tie each side and not worry about something showing.  We were there 4 days after she was born and by day 2 I was wearing my own pj pants and didn't ruin anything.  GL I am so excited you are almost there!!
  • ditto rachel. ?i wore one gown one way and the other one backwards so my junk didn't hang out for everyone. ?but by day 2 i was in my own clothes again. ?good luck! ?i am SO excited for you!
  • I used the hospital gown for the first few days and eventually changed into a gown that I bought. It was nice to change once I felt a bit better. Like other posters said, with a C Section, you may get up a little bit to walk around, but it is difficult and you will probably just get up to go to the bathroom and maybe walk to the nursery.

I would also suggest buying some big underwear to wear home. I made my DH go get me a large size high waisted (granny panties) to wear home because my other underwear hit right where my incision was.  The funny thing is that he bought me a large and then a 3 X (I am usually a medium). I said he just wanted to make sure they were big enough. I never even opened the package.

Please let me know if you need anything. I am not that far away and now that Jack is almost a month, I can get him out of the house.
