Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone experience ear infection w/o fussiness?

DD has been running a fever (101-103.6) since sometime in the middle of the night Sat/early am hours Sun.  At first, she had a couple of small bouts of diarrhea very close together Sun morning, and then nothing but the fever.  Then she was looking like she was getting better yesterday afternoon/evening before her fever returned last night.  This a.m. she woke up and threw up twice.  When she's taking ibuprofen, she's pretty happy, normal and comfortable.

The thing is she's not fussy at all.  It seems like it's either a digestive tract virus of some sort, which is what I had been thinking, or an ear infection, which I'm less inclined to think b/c of her lack of fussiness, no recent colds/drainage, etc.  (My mom thinks it might be one though.)  I haven't taken her to the dr yet b/c a) I really thought it was a virus anyway and b) we're 12hrs from home so our only option is an urgent care clinic if we can find one that accepts our insurance.  Ugh!

  • Emerson never shows that she is in pain.  I never know when she is sick until she starts running a fever.  She had an ear infection for almost two months and she never, ever complained.  Makes we feel like a winner of mom.

  • At 21 months DD showed no symptoms of anything (no fussiness, no fever, not even a sniffle) and then one night started coughing like crazy for 2 hours before going to sleep. She was normal (not even any coughing) the next day, then coughed the next night for 2 hours before going to sleep.  Repeat.  As it happens we were away from home too but after 3 nights I took her to urgent care.  She was diagnosed with a double ear infection.  Oh, and that was her first and only ear infection to date.

There are a variety of ways these infections can present, but regardless that's a pretty high fever and it came back, so whatever it is isn't getting better.  I would take her in asap.

  • DS was about 13 mos the last time he had an ear infection.  The only signs were a slight fever and he wouldn't eat (he's a big eater, that is so not normal for him).  I thought he just didn't feel good or had a virus.  Took him in and he had a cold and a double ear infection.  Ugh, I felt so bad!!  I can't believe he wasn't fussy at all, and I felt like I should have "known" something was wrong.  You really can't tell unless you look in their ears, I would take your LO in...  Better safe than sorry!

  • I never know when DS has an ear infection. I usually just notice one thing like him being more tired...and then bring him in. You can wait until tomorrow as long as her fever can be contained. Just call first thing in the a.m. and tell them its urgent. If it were me I would be nervous all night, so perhaps just set an alarm and check on your LO every few hours.
