Mei Tai Questions

DH and I have decided to not take a stroller on our European trip this fall and instead invest in a new carrier. I have several wraps which I plan to bring but want something that is a little easier for up/downs on the back!

I have an Ergo but I hate it a strong passion! ;)  It just feels uncomfortable and DD hates how low she sits when on my back. I'm interested in trying a MT (can you get a higher back carry with these vs. the Ergo?). I have been lurking on FSOT but all the options confuse me! I need some MT schooling :)

I see people say toddler-size, infant-size, one-size....what is the best option (DD is currently 29in and 22lbs). A lot of them list strap length/widths....how do I know what I should look for? I don't really want to go over $120 since I'm not sure DD or I will love it.....any brand recs? (or does someone want to shop for me!)

Re: Mei Tai Questions

  • You can definitely get a much higher back carry in a mei tai vs. an Ergo.

Toddler sized mei tais tend to run huge!  I'd look for a standard size in a brand with padded shoulders and waist for comfort, and probably stay away from any wrap style straps since you want to do back carries.  Kleinsmekker, Kindercarry, and Himmel would all be good options.

Strap length just depends on how you want to tie off and how fluffy you are.  Longer waist straps will work with a larger waist, longer top straps allow you to tie tibetan or loop around an extra time.  I prefer a standard waist and 80" top straps, personally.

  • There's a cute $100 Kindercarry and a $90 custom Himmel both here.  There's also another $100 Himmel here.

  • Ohhh! Thanks! :)

  • I bought my Mei Tai from Meitaibaby.com and love it. There is a lot of info on the website also and not too many options to be confusing.
  • I got a Kozy Mei Tai used off of TBW a while back that I really like.  It has the padded shoulder straps but not a padded waist but honestly I dont really notice.  Kozy's tend to have a slightly larger body to the actual carrier and a slightly deeper pocket so they are great for bigger kids.  I spent 40 used because mines a bit of a wierd color but usually you see Kozys going for around 60.
