Moms of Boys: Leaking Diapers

My babies are 3 weeks old and in the last couple days I've had a ton of leaking diapers for DS.  They are fine for DD so I'm not blaming the diapers, but am I doing something wrong?  Does he need a smaller or bigger size?

They seem to be leaking on one side at the top.

  • Only tip I have: Make sure you point his li'l pee-pee down when you put a new diaper on.

  • Are you pointing it down?  I noticed that DS would leak from the top when we did not point it down when we put the diaper on.  We also noticed that we had leakage with huggies while pampers seemed to work well.
U/S#1 showed 2 heartbeats! U/S#2 showed Baby A's heartbeat was 157 and Baby B 's heartbeat was 183! U/S#4 showed Baby A is a Boy (heartbeat 161) and Baby B is a Girl (heartbeat 159)!! Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • Definitely make sure his pee-pee is down, but we had tons of blow outs with Huggies, I think they work better on girls. You might try going up a size too but with him being 3 weeks I would think the NB would still fit him. HTH.

  • Point down, like the other ladies have said.  Also, that was usually a cue to me that it was time to move up a size in diapers.  Has he come close to the weight limit for the next size diapers?

Ditto the p.p.'s. Huggies always leaked for me so I switched to pampers. Or Target brand. And pointing his penis down is critical too. If he's near the weight limit you could try going up a size.

ETA: I always have to make sure the tabs on the top side of the diaper are actually around their sides and not tucked under improperly (hope that makes sense). Otherwise I get top/side leakage too.

  • As PP have said make sure to point the peeper down.  I used swaddlers over Huggies because they always leaked for me even with the peeper down.  To make sure that it is pointed down I always fasten one side, point down, and fasten the remaining side.

Caden brings up a good point to make sure that the top side of the diaper is around the leg to the backside.

As of a week ago he was 7lbs 2oz and I believe the newborn diapers go up to 8lbs.  I can't imagine he'd gain a pound in a week, but who knows.

    THIS!!!

ETA: we never had luck with huggies and DS always outgrows diapers when he's within 2 pounds of the upper weight limit (i.e. if a diaper is 12-18 lbs, he's ready for the next size when he's 16 lbs.)

and FWIW my kids gain about .5 lbs per week HTH!

Did they have circs and are you doing A&D ointment?  I find that the ointment gets on the diaper and somehow repels liquid or something and makes the diaper not absorb.

I haven't found the weight limits on diapers to be all that accurate in terms of what actually *works* for my kids. But then again I've been really quick to move up sizes as needed-- I'm willing to trade a little too much diaper for a few fewer leaks! :)
