I think there are some great pics I have seen that are done within the first 2 weeks. I just have never gotten it together that fast and both of ours were done when they were 1 months old. I wish I had them done within the first week though honestly...
Daughter born July 2008; Daughter born March 2010
Son born August 2011
For DS we did newborn ones at the hospital, 3 months, 6 months (which were also our holiday pics), and his first birthday party. So far for DD we've done NB at the hospital.
A very good family friend is a photographer (an amazing one!) and she likes newborns (under 2 weeks old) and older babies (8-10 months). It's hard to take pictures once they are older than a newborn but unable to sit up, stand etc. And when they get a little older it's hard to get them to sit still for pictures. With DD, we did newborn pics, 6 months (just at Sears) and 10.5 months (with a professional, for her 1st birthday invite etc.). I would try to find a photographer you like and ask them their opinion as well. HTH!

With Henry we did NB/3M/9M/12M/18M and we'll do 2 years. With Eleanor we'll do NB/3M/6M/12M...only reason for the difference in schedule is because her 6M coincides with Henry's 2Y and we can do them together so it's less expensive.
newborns 5-10 days, around 3 months if you REALLY want to (they're still tricky at that age, I've had ONE kid that age give me "great face" but the rest are still in that lumpy stage, lol) 6-9 months, (again, 6 months is hard unless they're great sitters) and a year. two yrs, etc.
Some phototogs have packages if you really love them. Some also have "mini sessions" around holidays, another way to capture the age without spending a fortune.
Congrats on your baby ;-)

we did newborn pics when DD was 9 days old. We hired a prof photo who comes to your home. Then we went to a studio in the mall for her 3, 6, 9, and will do 12 month there too.
Re: what's a good age for baby photos
As soon as possible as they are born, around 4months, once they can stand, and then a bit after a year.
We took so many 1st birthday pictures, duplicating it with professional photos would have been too much.

How many times do you want to have a session?
I would say at any of the below milestones
- newborn
- after they smile
- after they can sit unassisted
- after they crawl
- 1
Most of the above kind of align with the 0/3/6/9/1 month marks, which is why you'll see some photographer packages line up with that.
In the first two years I say at every 6 months feels about right. They change SO much in those time periods.
