Can anyone tell me about the differences between Lamaze and Bradley? I was hoping to take Bradley Method classes, in part because there are 12 classes instead of 4 or 6, but I am not sure if I can find a class that matches my schedule. Otherwise, I will just end up taking Lamaze class from my hospital and I am wondering if that is really worthwhile or not? My goal is to minimize interventions and being able to relax/deal with the pain as best as possible, but I am not above taking drugs if I can't make it.
Re: Lamaze vs Bradley Method?
Hi Erin!
Lamaze and Bradley were contemporaries, so they had a lot of the same 'history' going into creating their methods. Dr. Lamaze tailored his classes after the ideals of hypoprophylaxis... aka altered breathing to change your brains perception of pain. Today's Lamaze classes focus much more on relaxation, position, and diet/exercise...
Dr. Robert Bradley created a method of childbirth class that focused on complete physical, emotional, and mental relaxation to allow the body to birth. Whereas Lamaze taught altered breathing patterns, Bradley taught deep abdominal breathing. They both are big proponents of active birthing, A&P, nutrition, exercise, and practicing relaxation techniques.
Just to let you know, there are other options such as Hypnobirthing, Hypnobabies, 2-day private classes of independent methods, or hiring a doula who would go through this same information in prenatals with you. If you wanted recommendations for any of those, or contact information for options, let me know and I can send them by pm.
