Circumcision ????

This may have been asked or possibly a dumb question but...what kind of ointment will I need to take care of my son's circumcision?

Re: Circumcision ????

  • The nurse that taught my newborn class said cover generously with vasoline after each change and put a gauze pad over it.

My friends all said the same thing...  One even suggested KY instead as it doesn't hold on to the gauze like vaseline

Every time you change your baby's diaper, apply a protective lubricant such as petroleum jelly to the circumcision site to keep the wound from sticking to the diaper unless there is already a protective gauze in place. In this case, follow your doctor's instructions as to when to remove it and if you should change it.

    2

Do not touch the wound for 7 to 10 days until it heals. It is best to wash it by gently rinsing with warm running water, particularly after a bowel movement, which could infect the site with bacteria.

    3

After the initial healing process, you may want to gently pull the penile shaft skin away from the glans once a day to keep them from fusing.

    4

Contact your doctor if the entire penis is red, warm and swollen and the surgical site is draining pus.

This is what I was told too, but the gauze pad thing doesn't make sense to me, nor I have heard that from anyone else but the class instructor.

If you put a gauze pad over it, then it will absorb the baby's pee, which I wouldn't think would be sanitary. IDK maybe they mean to leave the tip open. I plan to ask the nurses/pediatrician about this at the hospital.

You will definitely need vasoline or petroleum jelly though.

  • Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure if I should use vaseline, A&D or something like neosporin. Is Vaseline safe to use with CDs? Or should I use disposables the first week. I just happen to think about all of this now...1 week from my due date. I'm such a procrastinator!

we had to use the gauze pads with DS--I think it's b/c the material of the diapers is more likely to stick to the tip of the penis than the gauze pads.

Lots of ladies use 'sposies until you're not dealing with meconium anymore.  That's what we did with DS1, and what we'll do with DS2 as well.  You can always strip your CDs after you use vaseline or petroleum jelly.  Also, just post this question on the CD board.  I'm sure some of them have some experience.  GL!!

  • definitely get the squeeze tube of vaseline/petroleum jelly.  way easier than scooping it out of the jar with your finger for diaper changes.

  • With DS#1 the hospital gave us the squeeze tube of petroleum jelly that we used while we were there.  So I would ask (if you are getting him circumcised while your still there) if you could keep the tube that you used (they would throw it out otherwise).  We also put gauze pads over the penis.

Although this did not happen to us...

Do NOT get the rubbing alcohol and the jelly/whatever you end up using mixed up.  While the umberical cord area might not be bothered by the pj/vaseline- your son's penis will not like rubbing alcohol on it!!!!!
