We are looking to purchase either late fall or early next year once the new baby arrives (we;d like to pay cash, not finance it).
After months now of deep research we've got it narrowed down to a 2010 Mazda5 or a 2007 Ford Freestyle. Im leaning in the direction of the Mazda as Consumer Reports likes it much more, and I can afford basically a new car vs one that will be 5 years old. But the 4 cyl. engine scares me.
Anyone have one of these and can recommend it?
Thanks all

Re: buying a new car Mazda5 vs Ford Freestyle. reccomend yours?
I don't have either of those cars, but was faced with a similar situation when we bought our Hyundai Elantra this winter. It was either a new Elantra or a used Toyota Matrix. We went with the new(er) car and don't regret it at all.
On a side note, have you also looked at the Kia Rondo. I was never really a fan of Kia, but the Rondo has been getting great reviews and it apparently is a better value for the price than the Mazda 5, which is the other car I am looking at for when we change our family car.
Regardless of which car you choose, I'd love to hear your feedback when you've had it for a while, as we will be getting more serious about replacing our family car in a year or so.
I have a 2010 Mazda5, purchased new in late February. Frankly, I have almost no complaints. Previously, if I owned a 4 cyl it had to have a manual transmission because of the way that I drive...the automatic's just couldn't keep up. However, the 4 cyl on the Mazda5 is great, IMO. It has plenty of pickup and I'm a LEAD FOOT.
I have two complaints. 1) the lights don't have an auto off when you turn the car off...you have to turn them on/off manually. I was so used to not having to touch them ever, LOL. This is really a non-issue. 2) The front seats could go back a little farther. However, DH is 6' 5" and he still fits fine with DS's massive convertible seat behind him, so it's fine....and I'm 5'8" with super long legs and I still fit fine as long as I have the seat in the farthest position.
Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase so far:o)
Good choice, Monsieur. The new Hyundais have such a great warranty and are built well at affordable prices. FWIW my H is an auto mechanic and his vehicles of choice include the new Hyundais.
We have a Mazda5 and love it. We bought it at the very end of 2009. I have it with only 2 kids at this point, but will get to see it with the 3 soon. It is so great on gas mileage and you can't beat the price (I recommend going the online method). The 4-cylinder engine has worked beautifully for us, and to me, feels like it has plenty of power, even when fully loaded.
The only real downside is the lack of cargo space when the back row is in use. I love that you can fold one side down. That really helps and you can squeeze a lot into that one side. But with both back seats up, I only have room for a small stroller and not many groceries
Other than that, it drives beautifully and comfortably and I love it more than I expected to. It makes a great use of space. Hooking up a car seat is a breeze. Seats are comfy and there is plenty of room for legs and heads
We were able to buy a brand new, reliable car for the same price we would have bought a 5 year old Toyota or Honda minivan. The size makes it so easy to get around too.
I Highly recommend the Mazda5!
We have a Mazda5 and we LOVE it. It's a 2009, so we have had it about 2 yrs. We have 3 kids: 6 1/2, 5, and 17 months. It works great and was way cheaper than the Sienna or Odyssey.
It's easy for the kids to get in/out of by themselves (the older ones anyway) and it is easy to reach the kids in the 3rd row. We get great pick-up on it and it has the turning radius of our old Civic (easy to make u-turns, tight parking spots, etc).
My brother is expecting his 3rd and we recommended it to him as well and he is considering it.
