Food Allergy

Allergen Help!

DS2 who has been on a DF, GF and SF diet from 12 mo on had severe diarrhea last night, twice. Both times enough for me to have to change the bed. Now he gets an upset tummy once or twice a month usually from eating even the smallest amount of dairy or soy that he might have sneaked or DH inadvertently fed him but this was pretty bad. We haven't done any allergy testing, we avoided the ones that he had reactions to and avoided the gluten and wheat because DH has it pretty bad. I am thinking I am avoiding the inevitable here and he may never grow out of and instead develop more severe allergies at this rate. What do you think? Oh and DH's family on his mom's side is where all these food issues stem from his maternal grandfather had diverticulitis, colitis, Crohn's and who knows what else he had they hadn't diagnosed.

  • I think you need to go get him tested.  You may be avoiding things you don't need to and you may need to avoid things you aren't. Knowledge is power.  Just get him tested so you know and there can be no accidental intakes.

  • Yeah I am thinking that too although the soy and dairy are really quite real.  He just has never been able to ingest any of these without a severe gastro reaction.  He has had some exposure to gluten and wheat but not as strong reaction.  I am suspecting corn as the new culprit I am just dreading having more added to the list from the testing, oh well I guess no time like the present.

Agreed.  It's hard to provide proper care if you don't know what you're dealing with.  Also, would your DH be more careful if you had an official diagnosis?

  • Nope, he is constantly picking things up and feeding him without reading the ingredients panel and we've had the discussion many times.  Considering he's the one that needs to be reading the panel for himself and he never does and cheats constantly yet he agrees with me the aftermath of accidental ingestion is not pleasant either.  He is getting better at it though.

This.  And have your DH come to the allergist apt. too.  The allergist can explain how serious it is and then it's not just coming from you.

that's an excellent idea!  you should totally make him come.

I think the only reason my DH is so strict is b/c he witnessed an anaphalectic reaction and has gone to most of the appointments and the doc was very stern with both of us.
