Anyone still running?

I was wondering if we still have some running mom's out there and how you are doing? I still run my 3 miles every few days but my family keeps insisting me to stop because they swear its not good for the baby. Now my doctor said its perfectly fine due to how active I was prior to pregnancy and to just listen to my body. Anyone else hearing similar things?

Re: Anyone still running?

  • Since I've always been a runner, my midwife said it's completely fine to continue for as long as my body allows.  I run 3-5 miles 4-5 times a week with no issues.

I do get the same comments as you though.  Apparently, my baby will be born with brain damage because of all the shaking going on in there when I run.  My mom said I should stop and my neighbors give me dirty looks every time I run past.  One of them (a woman in her 80s) told me I need to stop because it's not good for the baby.  FWIW, my friend ran every single day up to a week before delivery and her baby is totally fine and very healthy. On the plus side, she lost all her weight within 2 months because she was so active during pg and really soon after birth.

  • I stopped two weeks ago after enduring some discomfort on my lower right side towards the end of my run.  I am fairly certain its RLP (happens at the end of my walks with my pup sometimes too) so I may give it another shot this week before calling it quits until after the birth.  I really miss it- even the two miles I'd been doing as of late made me feel great.

Oh and my doctor said it is fine to continue running, so long as I was running prior to pregnancy.

  • I'm not running because it is really hot here, even in the evenings.  Also, DD is going through a phase where she doesn't want to stay in the stroller.  I do step aerobics after lunch (30 minutes) and use my elliptical after dinner (30 minutes).  I feel absolutely fine and don't even tell anyone IRL that I still exercise.  I got a lot of unwanted advice with my first pregnancy.  My doctor says to keep it up as long as I can!

I don't run but I still do my regular exercise and I get comments all the time.  And if DH wasn't with me when the DR said it was okay to continue the same activity level I had pre-pregnancy, he would probably try to stop me too!  We went mountain biking (not too rough of a course) Sunday, and I got plenty of comments.  Of course, I won't be able to ride my bike much longer cuz my belly's gettin in the way!  It's like waddling on wheels, lol.

  • I ran 3 miles just yesterday.  Unfortunately, it was followed by (TMI) wretched stomach cramps and diarrhea.  Well, at least it got thing moving!  Anyway, it's been so hot here that I've been running on the treadmill but sometimes even then I feel like I'm getting overheated with the humidity.  I try to at least run one mile/workout session and do the remainder of cardio on the elliptical if I don't feel up to running the entire time.

  • Still running every day. I do 2 miles every morning before work during the week with another mile or two in the evening on the treadmill. I do 3-4 miles on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • I stopped around 24 weeks when I hit a mile time of 14 minutes. It just seemed too pathetic to continue. My doctor did tell me, however, that I could go on running as long as I felt comfortable. I do continue to go to the gym for the cardio machines and weight classes.

  • I stopped at 24 weeks due to RLP. I'm still taking TKB which is pretty high intensity cardio, walking, doing the elliptical, and riding bikes. I get a lot of feedback - especially when I'm doing classes at the gym, but thankfully most of it has been supportive.

I heart this.  I applaud you ladies who are still running/working out so much.  I was sick and nervous in the first tri and never really picked things back up in the second tri. I would LOVE to work out again, but just getting through the day is an effort, so I'm thinking I will pick things back up after baby is here.  You all rock though!

  • My Dr. also said it is fine so long as I am comfortable.  Unfortunately my last run was 2 weeks at 26 weeks because it was just more than I could handle.  I was getting winded so quickly and it really felt much harder than seemed okay, so I am done until after baby.  I have been walking and doing yoga, but it is not the same.  Can't wait to start up with runs again after baby.  I was able to run 3 weeks PP with DS.  Hope the same thing happens this time.

Kudos to those still running!  I'm envious.  I quit in May at around 16 weeks after a half marathon because it started to get hot and my back (recent history of herniation) couldn't take much extra weight.  I still walk 40-60 min a day at crazy labrador pace, and switched to swimming (yay for triathlete skills!).  My back has felt great and my OB is in full support.

  • Still running....but slowing down dramatically!  Everyone I speak to believes it is safe as long as you listen to your body and watch your core temperature. In the last 2 weeks I have had to alter my first km.  I have to do a run/walk series to loosen things up or I get side cramps.  So it takes me longer to get going, but I am not dead yet!  There are some women doing this until labor.  I set my goal each week and take every run for what it is, knowing that my body may tell me to stop any day.  Keep going and best of luck!

  • I am, just less mileage less often and slower than I used to.

It's great for baby to get the increased oxygen, first of all! Secondly the more active you stay during your pregnancy the easier it'll be for you to get started again once the baby comes.

I feel so good after I run, but there have been times this pregnancy where running just felt WRONG so I walked instead.  As long as you're listening to your body I don't think you can go wrong.  My MW reminded me that runners have a tendency to push through pain but we have to be really cautious and listen to our bodies well and shouldn't have trouble.

It's good for me and good for baby, and I don't plan to stop any time soon.

  • I just did a 5 mile road race on Thursday and felt good - minus the heat! I hope to continue running as long as I can. For some reason I can run much further outside then on the treadmill. Whenever I run on the treadmill I just want to stop and walk!

  • I dont get it, I want to continue my regular exercise regimen prior to pregnancy which was a lot of cardio, (cycling class), BUT my doctor said to keep my heart rate at 140 (max) for 20 minutes at a time. She wants me to still be able to talk and not run out of breath during my maximum cardio time. That's hardly a workout for me.  I'm so used to sweating and getting a really good workout.  I feel so restricted.

totally jealous of the ladies who can still run. why is my doctor so conservative???!

  • Yes Kudos to you ladies still out there running. I think it is so awesome. I was restricted in the beginning for a lot of reasons. But I will be so happy to get back into it (pushing the bobb stroller) in a few months when baby gets here. :) I am sure that you will all bounce back so quick! I hope to be right behind you!
